The high school boys basketball season in Classes 3A-1A is back in full swing. No better time to hand out Player Props and then provide some free samples of some games to keep an eye on this week’s slate.
Player Prop
Cameron Rowney, The Vanguard School: Rowney, a 6-foot shooting guard is having a strong season posting 18 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists a game. His play has helped lead Vanguard to an 9-0 overall record. The Coursers most recent win was a 74-42 victory over Woodland Park Wednesday night. Rowney had an 18-point, five rebound performance in his team’s 68-50 trouncing of Lamar on Jan. 13. Vanguard is ranked No. 3 in the latest Colorado Preps 3A poll and has a big matchup on the horizon with it entertains No. 7-ranked Banning Lewis at 7 p.m. Friday.
Games to watch this weekend:
Class 3A
Forge Christian (8-1) at Manual (8-1), 7 p.m. Thursday: No need to look far to find a huge tilt in the 3A ranks. This game pits the No. 1 team Forge Christian and No. 2 Manual in Colorado Preps rankings. Owen Hovis leads Forge Christian pouring in 14.2 ppg and Peyton Miller is adding 12.4 ppg. Manual counters with the dynamic duo of Deshawn Fox (26.9 ppg and 10.8 rpg) and Markell Marquez (19.4 ppg). Fox has two 37-point games this season in wins over Yuma (Dec. 1) and DSST: Cedar (Jan. 8). Something has to give in this game as FC has won five games in a row and Manual is on a six-game victory binge.
Class 2A
Wray (5-5) at Holyoke (6-3), 4 p.m. Friday: Wray is coming off a tough 46-45 loss to Denver Christian, ranked No. 5 in the Colorado Preps poll, on Jan. 13. The Eagles have a chance to regroup and capture some much-needed momentum when it hosts Caliche (3-5) at 4 p.m. Thursday followed by a key game with Holyoke, ranked No. 10 by Colorado Preps. Wray is paced by senior Rafael Trejo who is scoring 16.2 ppg. Holyoke will counter with senior Wyatt Sprague who is scoring 18.6 points per contest. Holyoke is aiming to bounce back after a 67-41 home setback to Yuma on Jan. 12. Yuma is ranked No. 5 in the latest Class 3A Colorado Preps rankings.
Class 1A
Denver Jewish Day (7-1) at Mile High Academy (3-3), 6:30 p.m. Thursday: Denver Jewish Day, which is ranked No. 10 in the latest Colorado Preps 1A poll, looks to keep its foot on the gas pedal. Fresh off a 73-48 throttling of No. 9-ranked Denver Waldorf Wednesday, Denver Jewish Day meets Mile High Academy. Leading the way for Denver Jewish Day is a trio of double-digit scorers Keenan Winnerman (17.3 ppg), Solly Bielsky (15.4 ppg) and Lev Friedman (12.4 ppg). Mile High Academy is paced by Josh Makiziman (8.3 ppg).
