Latest RPI standings from CHSAA have been released this morning and we post the top 24 in each classification from 1A through six-man. League champions automatically qualify for the playoffs and the rest of the brackets are filled out with at-large berths based on these standings.  Once the 16 playoff teams are determined, then a seeding committee draws up the pairings.
A note on the six-man standings.  Right now, Manzanola and La Veta are tied for the South Central conference lead so one of the teams will be crowned league champion.  Both are outside the top 16 in RPI standings but the league champion will receive an automatic playoff berth; which could bump a higher ranked team out of the playoff picture.  If the league winner does not finish in the top 16, they are not guaranteed a home playoff game in round one.
As mentioned on twitter this morning by CHSAA, Peetz and Prairie have played the same schedule with identical results so their RPI is exactly the same at .620417 so they share the seventh spot.
In the eight-man standings, West Grand has moved ahead of Sedgwick County for the top spot and strength of schedule is the major reason why.  Both teams are unbeaten but West Grand’s schedule is rated as the sixth most difficult (.600) and Sedgwick County 11th (.530).    That .070 advantage moved the Mustangs into the top slot
Another interesting note on the standings has Fowler #8 and Holly #10 this week.  Holly has a head-to-head win over Fowler plus a better overall record, so again strength of schedule plays a role there.  It’s the same with Custer County (13th) and Simla (15th) as the Cubs beat the Bobcats earlier this season.
The league we’re watching in Class 1A is the Foothills where the league champion could finish outside the Top 16 in RPI standings.  Platte Canyon scored a big win over Clear Creek on Saturday and that victory pushed the Huskies into 16th.  They were 20th the week before they remain squarely on the bubble for a home game in the playoffs should they land the championship.  Jefferson (4-1) is another to contender for that crown but the Saints are 24th this week.
Olathe may be the biggest surprise in Class 1A as the Pirates are fifth despite a 3-2 overall record.  Again, strength of schedule plays a major role as the Pirates are second to Centauri in that category this week.  Olathe lost to Centauri and a second loss is against Basalt which is the number one RPI team in Class 2A.
