Week eight of the football season concludes today with a busy Saturday schedule and at least eight matchups will directly impact league championship races and playoff scenarios. We provide a quick primer on those matchups and what results mean heading into week nine.

  • 4A:  Montrose at Denver South:  Ponderosa picked up a win on Thursday night so the 3rd ranked Indians need a road win to keep pace with the Mustangs in the Metro conference.  Montrose is also coming off a important victory over  Heritage last week.
  • 4A:  Vista Peak at Centaurus:  The Bison are 6-0 on the season but still need a win here to stay tied with Standley Lake (2-0) atop the Pioneer conference.
  • 4A:  Fruita Monument at Thornton:  The record is not as nice as Vista Peak but Fruita Monument (3-3) has the same scenario where a win keeps them tied with Standley Lake in first place in the Pioneer.
  • 3A:  Thomas Jefferson at Discovery Canyon:  Both were week one winners in a very good Central division.  The survivor here moves into a first place with top ranked Palmer Ridge at 2-0.  Both teams are 5-1 overall.
  • 2A:  Eaton at Resurrection Christian:  Even though two weeks will remain in the regular season after this one, the winner should end up as the Patriot West champion.  Both are 2-0 in league play and each has an important win over likely third place finisher University.
  • 1A:  Sheridan at Platte Canyon:  Neither club sits in the RPI top 20 but a playoff berth likely goes to the winner as the Foothills conference champion.  Both teams are 2-0 in league play but have combined for only one win outside the conference.
  • 1A:  Rye at Colorado Springs Christian:  Florence was very impressive in beating Buena Vista on Friday so CSCS must win to keep pace with the Huskies in the Tri Peaks.  A win by the Lions also clinches a top two league finish for both them and Florence.  Rye is 5-1 on the season overall and a win puts them in great shape to finish second in a very good league.
  • 8man:  Dayspring Christian at Merino:  Top ranked Sedgwick County has a bye this week and the Cougars are 4-0 in the rugged Plains conference.  Merino is 3-0 so a win keeps them tied with the four-time defending state champions in first.  The Eagles lost to SedgCo last week and must win today to stay in range of at least a top two finish.  Playoff seeding will also be impacted with this result.
