Despite having just four practices before seeing action this year, Fleming took home the top trophy at the Kit Carson tournament. The top ranked team in Class 1A moved past #3 Wiggins (2A) in the finals to win the top trophy.  Two other teams ranked in the top six of their respective class were also in the field; #2 Kit Carson (1A) and #6 Yuma (2A).  Fleming played in the state basketball finals last Sunday and did not begin volleyball workouts until Tuesday but they return virtually their entire roster from last year’s state championship club.

  • Before falling to Fleming in the championship match, Wiggins rolled past Holly in three sets and Kit Carson in four. The 2-1 performance pushed their season record to 4-1 as they had swept Yuma and Wray in matches back on Thursday night.
  • Briggsdale is ranked second in Class 1A and took on some tough challenges on Saturday as they fell to 3A local rivals #6 University and Platte Valley.  The Falcons played very well against Platte Valley as they cane within four points of each of the three sets they lost.  They were swept by the unbeaten Bulldogs but played within four points in set one and forced set three to 27-25.
  • Telluride has been one of the busier teams in the first two weeks of the volleyball season and the Miners pushed their record to 3-2 by beating Ignacio on Saturday. They grabbed the three-set win 25-17, 25-22 and 25-22.  Telluride opened the season with a 3-0 loss to Ridgway but has won three of four since with the only blemish coming against 9th ranked Dolores in five sets.
  • Coal Ridge pushed their season record to 3-1 as they moved past Roaring Fork in three quick sets. It was their third straight win since an opening loss to Palisade.  The win also capped a strong week for the Titans as two days ago they outlasted 4A Steamboat Springs 3-2.  Against Steamboat, the Titans trailed 0-2 before winning the final three sets.
  • Top ranked Palmer Ridge (4A) had little trouble in getting past Fountain Fort Carson 25-15, 25-11 and 25-14. The win pushed the Bears to 5-0 on the season and they continued their early season streak of not dropping a set.  They have two matches next week against Vista Ridge (Monday) and Discovery Canyon (Wednesday).
  • Durango outlasted Montrose 3-2 inside the Southwestern league. The Demons are now 2-0 on the young season.  They fell behind two sets to one before taking game four 25-22 and game five 15-13.
  • Eagle Valley continues their push to a top 10 ranking in Class 4A as they defeated arch-rival Battle Mountain in four sets today. They’re now 5-0 on the season and have surrendered only two games to this point.  They have another key league match at home against Steamboat Springs on Tuesday.
  • Springfield has been a top 10 team in Class 1A through the first two weeks of the season.  They moved to 2-0 with a quality three-game sweep of 2A Rocky Ford.
  • Alamosa scored an important Intermountain league win over Bayfield this afternoon.  The final was 3-1.  Both teams were ranked in the top 10 of Class 3A with identical 2-1 marks going in.  Both continue to trail surprising Montezuma Cortez in the early conference standings as both have a league loss to the Panthers.
  • Rye is now 3-0 after scoring a pair of wins on Saturday; the Thunderbolts moved past both Peyton and Buena Vista this afternoon.  Those two wins followed an opening victory over John Mall.   Now they prep for a crucial stretch in the Santa Fe conference where they challenge top 10 opponents Hoehne on Thursday and then Fowler on April 6th.
