As Bishop Machebeuf’s Luke Sri and Dawson’s Charlie Martin fight over the state’s points lead, their respective teams aim for a first-round bye in the upcoming 2A playoffs.
Sri tallied 23 points in three games last week for the Buffaloes (10-3), which briefly moved him into the state lead with 66 (28 goals and 10 assists). But Martin then scored four times in a 7-1 win for Dawson (8-2-1) on Monday, supplanting Sri with 73 (34 goals and five assists).
The Buffaloes, ranked 2A No. 7 in the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index, currently own one of eight first-round byes in 2A’s 24-team playoffs. The Mustangs are 10th, with three games remaining before the regular season’s end on Oct. 26.
Below are a few other tight races around the state
Class 2A’s No. 1 seed
No. 1 Denver Christian and No. 2 Forge Christian, both out of the 3A/2A Metro League, are separated by fractions of a point for the top projected spot in the 2A playoffs.
The Thunder (8-1-3) are slightly ahead despite drawing 3A No. 2 Peak to Peak and losing to No. 4 Jefferson Academy last week.
The Fury (8-2-2) will likely need a win over 3A No. 42 Eagle Ridge Academy on Tuesday to stay alive before finishing the year against No. 7 Colorado Academy and No. 8 The Academy.
Class 3A’s goals lead
Manitou Springs’ Alexander Steger and Bayfield’s Ayden Casillas are both making a run at the title of 3A’s Goals King.
Steger has scored two goals in each of his last three games, giving him a class-leading 24 on the year for the 3A No. 16 Mustangs (8-2-2). His recent stretch put him ahead of Casillas, who ended a two-game scoreless stint with two in a 5-0 win for the No. 27 Wolverines (6-5-1). He has 22 on the year.
4A/3A Granite Peaks League
The league is made up of the No. 1 3A team and three teams in the top 10 in 4A.
4A No. 5 Longmont (9-0-2, 4A/3A 3-0 Granite Peaks) currently has a half-game edge over No. 4 Silver Creek (6-2-2, 2-0-1) and No. 6 Centaurus (6-3-2, 2-0-1). But nothing in the league has been decided as the Trojans must finish the regular season against Centaurus, Silver Creek and 3A No. 1 Holy Family (9-2, 1-2).
5A Jefferson County League
The 5A Jeffco regular-season league winner will come down to Thursday, when No. 11 Ralston Valley (7-3-2, 3-0-1 5A Jeffco) is at No. 6 Columbine (12-0, 4-0).
The Rebels can win their first Jeffco League title since before 2009 with a win or draw.
In the league’s goal race, meanwhile, Ralston Valley’s Cooper Hineline is ahead with 15. LJ Melucci is one behind at 14.
The next most from a player in the league is seven.
Who will be the last unbeaten?
In 5A, No. 1 Boulder (10-0-1), No. 2 Northfield (10-0-1), No. 6 Columbine (12-0) and No. 14 Vista PEAK Prep (8-0-3) are still unbeaten.
The Nighthawks face the Bison on Tuesday in a pivotal game in the 5A City League.
The Rebels host No. 11 Ralston Valley on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the biggest remaining regular-season test for the Panthers might be No. 31 Westminster and 5A’s goals leader Jorge Robles Guzman on Oct. 22.
In 4A, No. 1 Air Academy (9-0-2), No. 5 Longmont (9-0-2), No. 7 Montbello (7-0-6) and No. 11 Wheat Ridge (10-0-1) have also yet to lose.
The Kadets tied No. 17 Lutheran last week. They will likely need to win their final three games, including their finale over No. 13 Cheyenne Mountain on Oct. 22 to keep the classification’s top seed.
KIPP Denver Collegiate (9-0-1), ranked fifth in 3A, had its nine-game winning streak snapped with a draw against 4A No. 30 Eagle Valley on Saturday.
All 49 teams in 2A have already suffered a loss.
