The softball program at Centaurus High School, at 10-2, is having its best season in more than 16 years.
The Warriors haven’t had a winning season before records were saved onto MaxPreps in 2009. And now, they’re just a couple wins away from ensuring that streak will come to an end.
Their 10 wins are already tied for their most in a season during that span, matching a year ago when they were 10-12.
It comes only three years after they went 0-22 in 2021.
In this week’s look-in on softball, let’s dive into a couple of nice surprises from teams in each classification.
Class 5A
Grand Junction: The No. 16 Tigers (10-5) recorded their first winning season in seven years in 2023, finishing 14-11.
They’re on pace to beat that this fall.
Led by a strong offense headlined by juniors Ashley Gonzalez (28 RBIs) and Jaxon Clark (21), the Tigers will go into next week with six wins over their last eight games.
They face Niwot on Sept. 27.
Liberty: The 32nd-ranked Lancers (10-5) are looking for their second winning season in three years after going 14-11 in 2022.
Last year, they were just 7-16.
Senior Alex Graham homered and drove in three runs as part of a 10-8 win over Vista Ridge on Thursday. It was Liberty’s fifth straight win.
Graham leads the team with three home runs and 33 RBIs this season.
Liberty faces Pueblo West on Sept. 26.
Class 4A
Centaurus: The No. 27 Warriors (10-2) are led by underclassmen.
In Thursday’s 16-6 win over Jefferson Academy, sophomore Nora Midness had two hits, three runs scored and allowed just one earned run in six frames in the circle.
She leads the team with 18 RBIs this season, followed by freshmen Emi Sanders (17), Morgan Sizemore (16) and Emery Fannin (13).
The Warriors are at Pomona on Saturday.
Severance: The Silver Knights are in their fifth season as a varsity program, looking for just their second winning campaign.
Senior Aubrey Dare leads the way in the circle this fall, touting a 1.15 ERA across 61 innings. She also leads the team with 23 RBIs and five home runs.
Severance is home against Northridge Monday.
Class 3A
The Classical Academy: The No. 8 Titans have won seven straight and are a win away from matching their best season since 2015, when they finished 11-7.
Sophomore Ada Wilson had three RBIs and struck out 11 across seven strong innings in a 5-2 win over Falcon on Thursday. She leads the team from the plate, where she has 22 RBIs, and from the circle, where she is 9-2 with a 4.25 ERA.
The Titans home against James Irwin on Monday.
Florence: The No. 25 Huskies (6-3-1) haven’t had a winning season since 2013 when they went 12-10.
Last year, they were winless at 0-23.
Freshman Addison Dalton leads the team with a .692 batting average and 17 RBIs. In the circle, she is 5-3 with a miniscule 1.25 ERA.
The Huskies at Woodland Park on Tuesday.
