With 196 kills during the fall volleyball season, Springfield’s Cobi Mackey proved one of the state’s up-and-coming attackers in that sport.
The freshman’s stats in basketball are leaping off the page, as well.
With records for nine of her team’s 10 games available, Mackey is leading Colorado in scoring for freshmen, at 18.0 points per game. The next closest according to MaxPreps stats is Akron’s Molly O’Neil (15.7 ppg). Third is Conifer’s Izzy Ogden (14.0 ppg).
Mackey had an incredible weekend as the Longhorns improved to 7-3. She hit 11 of 13 attempts and finished with 26 points against Primero on Friday, and then turned around for 17 more points Saturday against Holly. Springfield rebounded as a team from a loss against McClave on Thursday.
The Longhorns are currently No. 7 in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index and have just one game this week, Saturday at Kit Carson.
Statement win
A big 3A Western Slope matchup between Cedaredge and Roaring Fork turned out to be a Bruins’ blowout, thanks in part to a pair of 20-point efforts from two veteran CHS girls. Senior Carley Malinowski, who was held to seven points in each of the two meetings between the teams last season, exploded for a career-high 29 points on 10-of-20 shooting in this go-round. Meanwhile, junior teammate Sammy Denison was even more efficient, going 8-for-13 for an even 20 points (tying a career high) in the 78-40 win.
The 10-0 Bruins now rank fifth in the Index, while Roaring Fork (11-1) still remain high at No. 12.
Milestones
As reported by Anthony Garcia of Mile High Prep Report, at least two small-school female athletes hit the 1,000-point career milestone last week.
With her 167th point of the 2024-25 season and in just her 62nd game played, McClave junior Abrielle Garcia reached the feat of 1,000 points against Springfield. She scored 20 points in the game and has four consecutive 20-point efforts since the break.
It took Rangely senior Miah Wren 77 games, but she also eclipsed 1,000 career points after combining for 46 over two contests last week. She also has three 20-point games since the break.
The week ahead
It’s a big week for 3A Resurrection Christian as it takes on Wiggins and Strasburg in Patriot League play. The Cougars are 11-0, while Strasburg has knocked out seven straight victories.
