Strasburg football appears to be firing on all cylinders after two dominant games to start the fall. The question is, will the Indians get a challenge this week from 2-0 La Junta?
The Colorado Preps Class 2A No. 3-ranked Indians have averaged nearly 160 yards passing and 170 yards rushing over their opening sequence of play. They’ve allowed just seven points in each of their first two games, creating six turnovers in the process. Even the special teams units have shown no glaring holes.
It’s the kind of start every coach dreams of, particularly after a season in which championship hopes were dashed in the second round of the state playoffs. Strasburg was the No. 1 seed in 2A last year but was stunned by Wellington, 17-0, in round two. Wellington went on to appear in the championship game.
The hunger for a deeper run is palpable. Junior Brody Hopwood has completed almost 64% of his passes, while senior Cade Hemphill is averaging 6.9 yards per carry with four scores on the ground — he’s got two TD receptions, as well. Senior Jorge Parra is averaging 12.4 yards per touch. The Indians are winning at the line of scrimmage defensively, already registering 14 tackles for loss.
Strasburg and La Junta will meet in the season’s third week for a second consecutive fall, and both teams entered last year’s game with 2-0 marks, too. Strasburg had no problems denying the Tigers a third win, though, as SHS took a 46-14 victory.
However, La Junta has a bunch of new players in key spots playing with confidence. That includes quarterback Gavin Denahy and running back Chris Barela.
Here are some other games that might provide a few fireworks.
Class 2A
Classical Academy at Elizabeth, 7 p.m., Friday
The No. 5 Cardinals want to take the next step, and this is an early chance to prove they can. EHS has gotten nice contributions from several running backs to post 217 yards a game so far, and they’ll be tasked on the other side with trying to stop TCA’s attack that has produced 440 yards of offense and 41 points per game thus far.
Class 1A
Denver West at Manual, 6 p.m., Friday
The inner-city rivalry will have a spicy edition in store as neither the Cowboys or Thunderbolts have a loss to their name yet. Manual (1-0) put up 62 points in its opener, getting 200-plus rushing yards and five TDs out of its stable of running backs, but it’s been a while since they’ve seen game action again. Denver West, meanwhile, is 2-0 behind the arm of Marcelo Ortiz (440 passing yards, 10 TDs). Senior Robert Wittke has caught seven of those touchdowns.
8-man
Sanford at Haxtun, 7 p.m., Friday
Definitely can’t ignore a No. 1-vs.-No. 3 matchup here. Both teams have scored over 100 points this season in getting out to 2-0, and both teams have allowed just over 30 points. Sanford, like Elizabeth, wants to show it can hang with the best after getting snuffed by the Bulldogs twice last season (60-0 and 54-8). The Mustangs will look to senior Trason Gartrell (345 rush yards on 25 carries) to help pace their offense.
6-man
Cheyenne Wells at Walsh. 7 p.m., Friday
The defending champ Tigers got back on track last week in a 52-0 win over Wiley, and now they’ll look to start a win streak against the 2-0 Eagles, who have posted 54.5 points per game so far and are ranked No. 7. WHS sophomore Hudson Gourley has already thrown for 546 yards and 13 touchdowns, with Maddox Gourley securing five of those scores.
