It’s down to the semifinals for the state’s two biggest classifications, with last year’s Class 6A winner Valor Christian and two-time defending 5A champ Mesa Ridge still alive.
In 4A, eight teams remain as each aim for its first title of the 21st Century.
The final games in 6A-4A will be played at the Denver Coliseum. The 4A quarterfinals are Wednesday followed by the semifinals on Friday. The 6A semifinals are Thursday and the 5A semis are Friday.
All big-school championship games are scheduled for Saturday.
Class 6A boys (semifinals):
No. 2 Eaglecrest vs. No. 6 Mountain Vista on Thursday at 12:45 p.m.
The Raptors (24-2) outscored ThunderRidge 20-7 in the fourth quarter in their quarterfinal win, moving within two wins of their third state title.
Mountain Vista (21-5) beat Chaparral behind 27 points from Cal Baskind. It’s looking for state title No. 1.
In January, Eaglecrest rallied to beat the Golden Eagles, 69-66. The Raptors outscored them 25-14 in the fourth as Ant Nettles finished with a game-high 23 points.
No. 1 Rangeview vs. No. 5 Valor Christian on Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Raiders (26-0) are two wins away from perfection. The Eagles (22-4) are two wins away from a repeat.
Rangeview needed two overtimes to get past Regis Jesuit in its quarterfinal. Freshman Marceles Duncan scored five of his 23 points in the second extra frame in a 75-69 win.
Valor Christian’s Cole Scherer, who leads the class in scoring at 26.1 points per game, had 28 points on 11-of-21 shooting in the Eagles’ quarterfinals win over Ralston Valley.
Class 5A boys (semifinals):
No. 16 Green Mountain vs. No. 21 Falcon on Friday at 5:45 p.m.
The Rams (17-9) knocked out No. 1 Lutheran in the round of 16, then beat Sand Creek in a low-scoring, 43-40 win in the quarterfinals. Their leading-scorer, Simon Lunsford (17.8 PPG), had 20 and 16 points in those wins.
In the meantime, the 21-seeded Falcons (18-8) continued their own surprising run to the semifinals with a 65-51 win over No. 4 Montrose. Tyler Cox (12.8 PPG) had 14 points on 10 shots to move them into the semifinals.
No. 2 Mesa Ridge vs. No. 6 Windsor on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
While not many around the state believed Green Mountain or Falcon would be one of the last four teams remaining in the 5A postseason, this is a matchup plenty expected.
A rematch of last year’s championship game — which the Grizzlies won — this semifinal features two stars in Mesa Ridge’s Bryce Riehl (17.5 PPG) and Windsor’s Madden Smiley (20.9 PPG).
Mesa Ridge can three-peat with two more wins. The Wizards, meanwhile, are looking for their first boys’ hoops championship since winning back-to-back titles in 1923 and 1924.
After the 2024 5A final, the teams met during the regular season this winter, with the Grizzlies using a 22-8 fourth quarter to prevail, 48-40.
Class 4A boys (quarterfinals):
No. 4 Prospect Ridge Academy vs. No. 5 Fort Lupton on Thursday at 10:15 a.m.
No. 1 Kent Denver vs. No. 25 The Academy on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
The left side of the bracket went somewhat according to what the rankings told us. Then there’s No. 25 The Academy (14-11), which used upsets over No. 8 Denver West and No. 9 Holy Family to get to this spot.
The Wildcats will need another big upset — the biggest in the classification this season — with No. 1 Kent Denver ahead. The Sun Devils beat the Wildcats by 41 points in January.
PRA-Fort Lupton is also a rematch from a January meeting. In that game, the Bluedevils held off a late run from the Miners, winning 83-82.
Fort Lupton (21-4) has won 16 straight. PRA (19-6) has won eight in a row.
No. 10 Colorado Academy vs. No. 15 University on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
No. 6 Coal Ridge vs. No. 19 Timnath on Thursday at 1:15 p.m.
No. 6 Coal Ridge (19-6) is the only host from the right side of the bracket to get through the opening two rounds of the 4A bracket.
The Titans, led by Ben Simons (15.5 PPG, 10.9 RPG) have Timnath (18-7) next. The Cubs upset No. 3 Aspen in the round of 16, 58-55.
University (18-7), meanwhile, looked little like a 15-seed in its overtime win over No. 2 Peak to Peak. John Elbe scored 22, Marcus Prestwich 19 and the Bulldogs rattled a Pumas offense that had been so good all year long.
They’ll face Colorado Academy (16-9), which beat No. 7 Sterling last round.
The Mustangs have been at their best over their last 10 games, where their only losses are to No. 1 Kent Denver (twice) and No. 2 Peak to Peak.
