Two very good matchups in Class 3A are the focus of the Wednesday volleyball top 10 schedule. Top ranked Eaton will get challenged by 5A traditional power Fossil Ridge while top five rivals Lutheran and Resurrection Christian also clash.
Eaton has momentum from last night’s win over University (3-1). It was their third high quality win inside the Patriot as they also beat Platte Valley and Sterling last week. All three opponents were ranked in the 3A Top 10 when they lined up against the Reds. Fossil Ridge is 3-0 and coming off a five-set victory over Legacy last Thursday. They led 2-0 but then lost games three and four before rebounding with a 15-6 decision in game five.
Resurrection Christian enters tonight match maybe a little tried after dropping a five-set marathon to Liberty Common on Tuesday. The loss dropped them two games behind the Eagles and Eaton in the Patriot chase so the focus may turn away from a league title to the highest possible seed for the regional tournament. A win over Lutheran tonight would help them achieve that goal. Lutheran sits atop our 3A Consensus rankings while the Cougars were fourth before last night’s loss.
In Class 4A, all three ranked clubs are favored on the road. Palmer Ridge is 8-0 and has not dropped a set the entire season. Liberty sits at 4-1 with a lone loss to 2nd ranked Cheyenne Mountain last month. Niwot is 7-0 and played four sets against Frederick but has swept their remaining six opponents. Longmont has played just twice this year but seeks their first win.
Windsor takes a break from the Northern conference schedule to face a former league rival at Fort Morgan. The Wizards (4-0) swept Longmont on Tuesday. Fort Morgan also has a three-game sweep of the Trojans and carries a three-match winning streak into the battle.
In Class 5A, all three games involving top 10 teams are within the Centennial conference. Standings through eight games have Cherry Creek and Cherokee Trail in first place (7-1) by two games over Grandview and Eaglecrest. The Bruins and Cougars have already split two conference meetings so if both win out, they will share the championship. In the Colorado Preps composite rankings released before games on Tuesday, they were also 2-3 in Class 5A; trailing only top ranked Mountain Vista.
In the smaller schools, Dayspring Christian comes off a strong sweep at Lyons on Tuesday night and should post another win this evening. The Eagles had 27 kills to just 11 for Lyons and finished with 15 serves compared to just two for the Lions.
