A pair of offensive touchdowns gave The Academy a quick lead over Class 2A No. 5 Elizabeth and the Wildcats held on to secure the state’s biggest upset of the week, winning 28-7.

J. Donahue got The Academy on the board with a rushing touchdown midway through the first quarter and then Isiah Eliot found Derrek Rael to go up 14-0. The defense chipped in as Real scooped up a fumble and returned it for his second touchdown of the game.

Eliot later added a rushing touchdown and the Wildcats erupted in celebration when the final buzzer sounded.

“They’re a tough team and they have some tough running backs. That was a big focus for us all week, coach Glenn Scott told Kevin Shaffer on the Scoreboard Show Friday night. “It was discipline and not being overly aggressive. Our defensive coaches did a great job with the game plan.”

The Wildcats have been receiving votes in the CHSAANow.com 2A poll and could find themselves in the top 10 after the upset win. They return home to face D’Evelyn on Saturday then face perhaps their toughest test of the season as they welcome in No. 2 Delta on Sept. 24.
