Several major wrestling tournaments were conducted over the weekend as teams and individuals put the finishing touches on the December portion of the 2021-22 season.  Falcon, Chatfield, Broomfield, Wray and Mancos were tournament winners and Colorado Preps breaks down the results with individual champions at each tournament listed as well.

Falcon was the team champion at the prestigious Northern Colorado Christmas Tournament in Greeley on Saturday.  They outbattled 66 other clubs for the championship; scoring 183.5 points to edge Cheyenne Mountain for the crown.  The Red-Tailed Hawks finished with 173 points followed by Pueblo East with 168 and Adams City at 159.  Dodge City KS finished out of the top fifth as the Demons ended up with 151.5 points.

40 girls’ teams were also entered in the Northern Colorado Christmas Tournament with Chatfield scoring 136 points to win the championship.  Loveland placed second with 105 and Discovery Canyon was next with 102.5 points.  Douglas County and Mead were fourth and fifth over the two-day event.

The second major boys’ tournament of the weekend was at the Grand Junction Central with 43 teams competing at the Warrior Classic.  Broomfield took the top trophy with 180 points with 2A Cedaredge a very close second with 169 points.  Fruita Monument placed third (167) with Brush and Meeker placing fourth and fifth with 151.5 and 149.5 points respectively.

Wray has tremendous wrestling tradition and a major part of the history is the annual Bob Smith Invitational.  It was held over the weekend with the host Eagles cruising to the team championship.  They scored a whopping 219.5 points to outdistance second place Limon (89) by 130 points.  Akron was third with Chatfield fourth.  Sedgwick County/Fleming (70.5) placed fifth in the 13-team event.

John Mall high school is the location for the annual Pete and Ina Gomez Invitational.  Mancos came over from the Western Slope to win the title with 173.5 points.  It was a tight race with Gunnison second at 162.5 and Palmer Ridge third with 149 points.  Lamar (128.5) and Crowley County (119.5) placed fourth and fifth in the team race.

17 teams were entered in the Forrest Davis Invitational at Sheridan High school with Skyline grabbing the top trophy.  The Falcons ran away with the team race; scoring 163.5 points with second place Classical Academy ending the tournament at 109.  Platte Canyon, Arvada and Englewood were the next three squads.

  • Pomona’s Daniel Cardenas should be in the discussion for the best wrestler in Colorado history. The three-time champion scored his 100th career victory on his way to the winning his weight class at the prestigious Ironman Classic in Ohio.  Cardenas shoots for his fourth state championship in two months.
  • County Line won the annual Holly Christmas Tournament last Friday. They totaled 112 points with the host Wildcats coming in second with 91 points.  County Line is a coop program featuring wrestlers from Wiley, McClave and Eads.  Taite Weeks-Johnson was the only County Line wrestler to win a championship as he captured the 220 pound division but the club also generated six second place finishes.
  • Top ranked Buena Vista (2A) won the team championship at the West Grand Invitational. The Demons were not pushed as they scored 188.5 points compared to 128 for second place Rangely.  Saratoga WY was third (117) with West Grand (93) fourth and Middle Park fifth (76.0).  12 teams were entered overall.  The Demons also won seven individual champions in JJ Medina (106), Caleb Camp (120), Chris Hutchings (126), Colton Montoya (138), David Arellano (145), Chris DeLuca (170) and Seth Moss (195).
