The Warrior Classic at Grand Junction Central and the Northern Colorado Christmas Classic in Greeley coming up this week draw much of the December wrestling attention but there were several major tournaments conducted over the weekend.  In some cases, the tournament favorites came away with the championship while there surprises in others.  And individually, a wrestler became just the second in the state to earn national recognition at a major event.

Results from various events are below with individual champions in each class also listed.

 

Pueblo East Invitational

In one of the premier events across the state this past weekend, Class 3A Centauri ended up with the top trophy as they worked past both Pueblo East and Pueblo County; the top two ranked teams in Class 4A.  The Falcons totaled 168.5 points with East second (141.5) and County third (140.0).  Fort Lupton also had a strong showing (108.5) and ended up fourth.  Centauri had four individual tournament winners with Pueblo County matching that number.

Limon Badgers Invitational

Crowley County was strong throughout the day and came away with the team championship.  The Chargers closed with 131 points to have a comfortable margin over second place University (109).  The Chargers also won the championship by depth as they did not score an individual champion in any weight.  Lamar was next in line with 107 points and the host Badgers finished fourth at 98.5.  Sterling edged Wray by one and a half points to end up fifth.

Gunnison took home the team championship by scoring 201.5 points to move past top ranked Buena Vista as the Demons ended up second at 185.0.  Pueblo Central was the only other team to crack the century mark as the Wildcats closed with 140.5 points and a third-place finish.

Delta Panther Invitational

12 teams were entered in the field and Cedaredge won a close race by scoring 208 points on the day. Moffat County placed second with 190 and Meeker also had a strong day with 177 points for third.  Florence was fourth (164) and the host Panthers ended up fifth (119).  Individual crowns were split up with Cedaredge and Meeker each winning four weights and Moffat County three.

Roosevelt Invitational

Cheyenne Mountain was the overall champion as the fourth ranked Red-Tailed Hawks totaled 169 points.  Severance, a top five club from Class 3A, earned runner-up honors with 127 points and Brush won a tight race for third with 106 points.  Roosevelt was fourth at 103 and Prairie View closed in fifth at 101.

Lewis Palmer Harold McCray Invitational

Falcon put in a strong effort last Saturday and rolled up 240.5 points to win the tournament championship.  The Falcons also landed a whopping seven individual champions.  Garden City, a 6A program from Kansas, placed second with 216.5 points and Cherokee Trail ended up third at 189.5.  The Cougars edged Greeley Central (186.0) is a close race for the third spot.

Dove Creek Dogfight

Mancos just missed out on the team championship on Saturday as the fifth ranked Bluejays scored 163 points to finish just two behind tournament champion San Juan UT.  The Bluejays also earned six individual champions including four in the lowest five weights.  Bayfield was third with 124.5 points and no other club totaled more than 70.  The Wolverines also finished with four individual champions.

Other Notes

  • Pomona three-time champion Daniel Cardenas became just the second Colorado wrestler to win an individual championship at the Ironman Tournament in Ohio. The senior is gunning for his fourth state championship in Colorado in February.  Cardenas downed Richard Fedalen of Maryland 10-1 in the championship match.  Ponderosa’s Kolton Schultz is the only other Colorado wrestler to win a title at Ironman.
  • Even with a limited roster, Pomona still earned the top trophy at the Mesa Ridge tournament on Saturday. The Panthers combined for 117 points to edge Chatfield (111) for the championship.  Douglas County (73) was third among the 25 teams entered.
  • Fowler from Class 2A was the big winner at the Wheat Ridge Invitational as the Grizzlies grabbed 191.5 points to easily outdistance second place Arvada as they ended the day with 136.5 points. Summit was third with 125.  Traven Sharon (106), Waitley Sharon (113), Boyd Rogers (152), Evan Bottini (170) and Gavin Unrein (220) all won individual crowns for the Grizzlies.
  • Hayden won the Soroco tournament with 186.5 points and cruised to the title by 80 points over second place Steamboat Springs. Soroco won the girls tournament there with 69 points compared to 60.5 for second place Olathe.
  • 15 teams were in the field at the Eaglecrest Girls tournament on Saturday with Vista Ridge earning the top medal. The Wolves totaled 134 points with Eaglecrest a very close second just three points back (131).  Discovery Canyon was third with 100 while Legacy and Denver East rounded out the top five.  Vista Ridge also had three individual champions in Allison Evans (161), Kaydence Bonewell (136) and Hayden Newberg (100).
