With a little more than two weeks remaining in the regular season, only four girls volleyball teams in the state of Colorado remain unbeaten.
That number could have easily been one less, and it would have been a stunning turn had it happened. On Oct. 7, Class 1A’s top-ranked Merino found itself in an unusual situation – having to play a marathon match. The Rams hadn’t dropped a set all season, but 2A’s No. 7 Wiggins took Merino to a fifth and deciding set in Lower Platte League play before the Rams pulled out the 22-25, 25-20, 25-14, 22-25, 15-7 victory.
That Wiggins is putting it together down the stretch isn’t a surprise. This is a program that has won two of the previous five 2A crowns, and finished runner-up to Sedgwick County a year ago. Three of the losses for the Tigers (10-4, 4-1) have come against the top three 1A programs, along with a fourth to 2A No. 3 Simla. But Wiggins has won four of its past five games, including a four-set triumph over Sedgwick County. Sophomore Karsyn Kerr leads the squad in kills and is second in digs, and senior Brooke Schmidt averages more than a block a set and is second in kills.
A gauntlet of a schedule still remains. The team will play in the challenging annual Sterling Tournament Saturday against the likes of 3A’s No. 1 Alamosa and Merino again. There is also still a league contest with 2A’s No. 1 Holyoke on Oct. 24.
Here is a glance at some of this week’s top games in each classification:
Class 5A
Ralston Valley at Valor Christian, 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21
Only two teams remain unbeaten in 5A Jeffco League play. No. 2 Valor Christian (13-2, 5-0), which fell to No. 1 Fossil Ridge in non-league play Tuesday, hasn’t dropped a set against a Jeffco team this fall. Junior Piper McFadden has been an assist-matchine for the Eagles, averaging more than 10 a set. … No. 8 Ralston Valley (13-2, 4-0) must get past a 15-win Dakota Ridge team on Friday before facing the Eagles. Senior Bella Goodall averages more than four digs a set.
Class 4A
University at Windsor, 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21
A rare non-league, mid-week matchup between two teams in the top 10 is a sure hit. No. 7 University (13-3) has taken 4A’s No. 1 Montrose and Patriot League foes No. 2 Eaton and No. 3 Resurrection Christian to five sets in each of its losses. The Bulldogs received 21 kills and 13 digs from sophomore Delaney Lauer in the loss to the unbeaten Cougars on Oct. 7. … Windsor (12-3 after upending 5A Loveland on Tuesday) face 5A No. 1 Fossil Ridge on Thursday in Northern League play. The Wizards have two more league games after that before closing out the season with the Colorado Invite tournament.
Class 3A
Bayfield at Centauri, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16
The Intermountain League is run by Alamosa this year, with Bayfield and Centauri battling for second. The sixth-ranked Wolverines (11-5, 4-2) have lost to Alamosa twice, 5A’s No. 7 Loveland and the top two teams in 4A (Montrose and Windsor). Bayfield swept Centauri on Sept. 26 behind 14 kills from Evelette Hollibaugh, 14 digs from Lauren Rich and 27 assists from Avery Shipman. … Centauri (12-5, 3-3) has also lost twice to Alamosa. The No. 5 Falcons are paced in both aces and digs by sophomore Aubree Ullery.
Class 2A
Holyoke at Sedgwick County, 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21
Merino is currently in control of the Lower Platte League, but both Holyoke and Sedgwick County are pushing to stay close. The Cougars (13-4, 3-1) still have to face Merino on Friday first. Senior Lainee Nein is averaging more than five kills a set. … Holyoke (16-2, 4-1) have won 11 in a row. The Dragons only have five regular-season games remaining.
Class 1A
Fleming at Prairie, 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16
Prairie is the only team in the North Central with a shot at catching Fleming in the league standings, though that is a tall task. The fifth-ranked Mustangs (14-2, 4-1) were swept by the Wildcats on Sept. 26, but have won six in a row since. Hanna Kugler and Tanna Bailey are neck-and-neck for the team lead in kills and Nicole Ludgate averages more than nine assists a set. … No. 2 Fleming (15-1, 6-0) hasn’t dropped a set since Sept. 4.
