Windsor’s Molli Magaña didn’t drive in a run in her team’s loss to Riverdale Ridge on Wednesday.
That’s news because it’s only the fourth time that’s happened this season.
The senior is in the midst of a remarkable season as she touts a nation-leading 52 RBIs through 20 games.
After blasting her 12th homer of the season in a league deciding win over Fossil Ridge eight days ago, she drove in No. 52 in a win over Greeley West on Tuesday.
Among the seven states playing softball in the fall, she shares the RBI lead with Georgia’s Megan Whitt despite having 21 less plate appearances.
In this week’s look-in on softball, we’ll dive into a couple of stats leaders with only two weeks left in the regular season.
Class 5A
Home runs: Valor Christian’s Kendall Ferguson (17)
The junior is hitting .649 with the nation’s second-most homers and Class 5A’s second-most RBIs (40).
She broke the school’s home run record of 11 back in late September and has clubbed five more since. Three of them came on Wednesday as the No. 4 Eagles (16-4) lost 14-6 to No. 2 Columbine.
Batting average and RBIs: Denver South’s Emma Gibson (.739 and 41)
After leading the nation with 75 RBIs a year ago, Gibson is currently sixth in the country in batting average and leads 5A in RBIs.
In three years, the junior is hitting .698 with 152 RBIs and 22 home runs. On Thursday, she extended her hitting streak to 17 games as the No. 30 Ravens (11-7) beat Denver North 10-8 for their third straight win.
Earned Run Average: Broomfield’s Ireland Heer (0.71)
The junior’s ERA is sixth-best in the nation (with at least 40 innings pitched). Her 11-0 record is the sixth best among pitchers without a loss this fall.
The No. 3 Eagles are 20-0 with three games left in the regular season.
Stolen bases: Grandview’s Sasha Kennedy (43)
Kennedy stole eight bags in a 15-0 win over Smoky Hill on Tuesday. Her 43 stolen bases are the most in the state and 12th-most in the nation for the eighth-ranked Wolves (16-5).
Class 4A
Home runs and RBIs: Magaña (12 and 52)
The senior also has 24 extra-base hits as she’s helped lead the No. 2 Wizards to an 18-2 record.
But Magaña isn’t the only dangerous hitter in Windsor’s lineup. Fellow-senior Lilia Mancina leads the team in batting average (.549) and on-base percentage (.648).
Strikeouts: Niwot’s Kianna Butler (173)
The senior struck out 12 in a five-inning, 10-0 win over Silver Creek on Thursday. Her 173 Ks are tops in the state and 13th-best in the nation.
The Cougars (13-7) are ranked 15th.
Wins: Berthoud’s Lily Dodd (16)
The senior is 16-1, tied with Forge Christian’s Julianna Alfaro (16-4) for the state lead.
Lutheran’s Ella Faries is 13-0, which is the fourth-most wins without a loss in the nation.
Berthoud (20-1) is ranked fourth. Lutheran (16-1) is first.
Class 3A
Batting average (with at least 50 plate appearances) and home runs: Peak to Peak’s Maggie Wallis (.780 and nine)
The senior is hitting .780, which is third-best in the nation. She also has 43 RBIs and nine home runs for the No. 15 Pumas (13-7).
On Thursday, she went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs in a three-inning, 15-0 win over Jefferson Academy.
Most wins without a loss: Eaton’s Bria Foster (8-0)
The sophomore has a 2.15 ERA and 52 Ks in 39 innings for the No. 1 Reds, (17-3), who have won by at least 10 runs in 13 of their 17 wins this fall.
Other standout pitchers in the classification include Lyons’ Gretta Wynja (160 Ks) and Forge Christian’s Julianna Alfaro (16-4).
