UPDATE:  New RPI standings were issued at 4:15am Sunday morning but did not affect our projections below.
Qualifiers have been determined and RPI standings were updated on Saturday night so we can start the process of projecting 1A boys’ basketball regional tournament pairings.  Three regions are set for next week with three state qualifiers coming from both the Southeast and Northeast regionals and two from the Western bracket.
Please note these pairings are unofficial and are based on projections by Colorado Preps.  Official pairings will be announced on Sunday.

WESTERN REGIONAL

This is an easy bracket to lay out as the District 1 champions plays the runner-up from District 6 and then champ from District 6 meets the second place team from District 1.  Games are set for next Saturday at Gunnison High School.

  • Sangre De Cristo vs Ouray
  • De Beque vs Primero

SOUTHEAST REGIONAL

A little different seeding process is in place for this bracket which combines the top three teams from Districts 2, 3 and 7.  District champs are given first round byes and seeded one through three based on RPI.  Runner-up teams are then placed in the bracket with the highest district champion placed together with the lowest ranked second place team not in their district.  Once that happens, then the rest of the bracket easily falls into place.  The setup prevents two teams from the same district being placed in the same three-team pod.
District champions are seeded in order with Kit Carson #1, Walsh #2 and Evangelical Christian #3.  The second place teams are seeded by RPI with Kim/Branson #4, Cheraw #5 and Pikes Peak Christian #6.  This order sets up nicely as it allows the top six teams to be true seeded.  Third place clubs are then placed in the bracket to avoid the district conflict.  So the brackets are projected in this order.

  • #6 Pikes Peak Christian vs #7 South Baca (winner plays #1 Kit Carson)
  • #5 Cheraw vs #8 Genoa Hugo (winner plays #2 Walsh)
  • #4 Kim/Branson vs #9 Granada (winner plays #3 Evangelical Christian)

The champion of each three-team pod advances to the state tournament.

NORTHEAST REGION

The same nine-team format is used in this region but teams are placed simply by RPI with district finishes having no bearing of where clubs are seeded.  Using the RPI from Saturday night, we have these pairings projected.

  • #6 Longmont Christian vs #7 Haxtun (winner plays #1 Mile High Academy)
  • #5 Merino vs #8 Stratton/Liberty (winner plays #2 Denver Waldorf)
  • #4 Denver Jewish Day vs #9 Idalia (winner plays #3 Briggsdale)

The bracket doesn’t need any movement of teams as each three-pod includes one team from each district.  Winners of the three games on day two of the event advances to the state tournament.
