District tournaments are fast approaching for Class 2A Girls’ basketball and those events will determine the 32 qualifiers to the regional tournaments.  Six of the eight districts send their top four qualifiers to the regional round with District 3 qualifying three and District 5 advancing their top five.  District champions earn the right to host four-team regionals.
Once determined the eight district champions are seeded one through eight based on RPI and placed in the bracket.  The remaining 24 qualifiers are then seeded 9-32; based again on RPI but those clubs can be moved to avoid district pairings in round one.  Teams seeded 25-32 can also be moved for geography and travel purposes.
The state tournament bracket will be reseeded once the eight regional champions are determined.
The first step in laying our bracket involves picking the qualifiers from each district.  Let’s start with the District champs and these are the eight teams that we project will grab championships.

  • District 1:  Del Norte
  • District 2:  Yuma
  • District 3:  Ignacio
  • District 4:  Limon
  • District 5:  Meeker
  • District 6:  Swink
  • District 7:  Heritage Christian
  • District 8:  Simla

These teams will be seeded in the bracket based on RPI and using numbers posted on January 27th, the order would be Limon, Del Norte, Heritage Christian, Swink, Meeker, Yuma, Simla, Ignacio
Next up is determining the other qualifiers from each district.  Again District 3 gets three teams in and District 5 earns five spots and the remaining brackets each send their top four overall.  We list the teams in no particular order as after the district championships, the order of finish does not play a major role in placing teams in the bracket.

  • District 1:  Sanford, Sargent, Center
  • District 2:  Wray, Holyoke, Wiggins
  • District 3:  Telluride, Mancos
  • District 4:  Byers, Denver Christian, Front Range Christian
  • District 5:  Soroco, Hotchkiss, Rangely, Hayden
  • District 6:  Rye, Rocky Ford, Holly
  • District 7:  Dawson, Highland, Lyons
  • District 8:  Peyton, Colorado Springs School, Calhan

The seed order for the non-district champions based on RPI from Sunday:

  • Wray
  • Peyton
  • Soroco
  • Holly
  • Calhan
  • Highland
  • Holyoke
  • Rye
  • Hotchkiss
  • Sanford
  • Rocky Ford
  • Dawson
  • Denver Christian
  • Byers
  • Hayden
  • Colorado Springs School
  • Rangely
  • Wiggins
  • Sargent
  • Lyons
  • Front Range Christian
  • Center
  • Telluride
  • Mancos

So now that we have our list of 32 qualifiers, we place them in the bracket for a two-day tournament.  Winners of the eight regional tournaments advance to state where they will be reseeded the Sunday before the actual event.  We do not move teams in the bracket as we rely on a true seed for the 32-teams.
