No lead appears to be insurmountable.
The boys golf state tournaments began on Monday at four different courses across Colorado and each one is set to see some fireworks in Round 2.
Falcon’s Cayden Besler has the biggest lead of any individual leader after firing a 5-under-par 67 at Lone Tree Golf Club for the Class 4A tournament. The leader at 2A holds just a one-shot advantage while there is a three-way tie at the top for 5A and a two-way tie at 2A.
Below is a quick rundown of everything that happened at each site.
Class 5A
Course: Columbine CC
Individual leader: Connor Young (Columbine), Aidan Lynn (Rock Canyon), Pierce Johnson (Boulder) (-3)
Team leader: Lutheran (+4)
Hardest hole: No. 4 – 4.869 average score (0.869 shots over par)
Easiest hole: No 8 – 4.940 average score (0.060 shots under par)
How far back is too far back?: There are nine total players within four shots of the leading trio. This isn’t so much about how low of a score is needed as much as how many players a kid has to overcome. A winner could come from that group of +2, but it’s tough to see anyone further back than that make a push.
Quick hits: With a three-way tie heading into the final round, the last group off the No. 1 tee is going to make for some appointment viewing.
Class 4A
Course: Lone Tree Golf Club
Individual leader: Cayden Besler (-5)
Team leader: Cheyenne Mountain (+2)
Hardest hole: No. 12 – 5.181 scoring average (1.181 shots over par)
Easiest hole: No. 16 – 5.181 scoring average (0.181 shots over par)
How far back is too far back?: Besler is in a good spot considering how well he’s been playing all year. There are talented players at even par and it feels like if someone is going to catch him, it has to come from even or better.
Quick hits: Cheyenne Mountain is on pace to keep the even-year trend alive. The Red-Tailed Hawks have won boys golf state championships in 2020, 2022, 2024 and are now leading in 2026.
Class 3A
Course: Cattails Golf Course
Individual leader: Levi McDowell (Resurrection Christian), Braylon Ball (Windsor Charter Academy) (-3)
Team leader: Forge Christian (+14)
Hardest hole: No. 16 – 6.488 scoring average (1.488 shots over par)
Easiest hole: No. 5 – 4.940 scoring average (0.060 shots under par)
How far back is too far back?: Manitou Springs sophomore Hayden Dorsey held the outright lead before hitting his tee shot on No. 13. Sitting at 1-over, he has the ability the climb back into lead during the day tomorrow. Anything further back than that might be tough.
Quick hits: The team title and individual title are both very much in play on Tuesday. The front 9 played easier in Round 1 so anything tight might be at the mercy of the unraveling that can happen on 13 and 16.
Class 2A
Course: Pueblo CC
Individual leader: Connor Mellott (Monte Vista) (+3)
Team leader: Vail Christian (+22)
Hardest hole: No. 12 – 5.667 scoring average (1.667 shots over par)
Easiest hole: No. 17 – 3.810 scoring average (0.810 shots over par)
How far back is too far back?: There are five players within two shots of Mellott. Rye’s Ty Wood and Vail Mountain Trevor Meltz are both five shots back which is going to make for a tough chase, especially with temps reaching close to the 90’s. That will only speed up the already slick greens at PCC. If anyone can chase down Mellott, they’ll likely have to come from 5-over or better.
Quick hits: Coming away with a state championship might boil down to who putts it best on Tuesday. The greens have alway been the defense at the Pueblo Country Club and with the leading score already sitting over par, it’s all going to come down to who rolls the rock the best.
