We continue our weekly previews as conference play begins or continues for everyone in the state this week. We’ll take a look at the three top games of the week as well as the statistical leaders for each conference with matchups occurring later this week.
Our first top game was played Tuesday in Mead where the second ranked Mavericks boat-raced #8 Erie in a 90-60 blowout. Erie jumped out to a 13-4 lead, but Mead controlled the game the rest of the way. Will Maher and Nick Jacobs shot the lights out from deep, with 22 and 16 points respectively. Trey Ward played well in all facets, scoring 18, and Jacob Bartholomew slammed home at least five alley-oop dunks and ended with 14. LaDorian Havard had a decent game for the Tigers, scoring 20. The Mavs continued their dominance against the Tigers (15-4 MaxPreps era), and have not lost in their gym to Erie since 2013.
With the win, Mead takes a two-game lead in the Tri-Valley, and will look to go undefeated through the first half of league play against Holy Family on Thursday. Erie will look to bounce back and stay in a tie for second with Windsor and Skyline when they host rival Frederick on Thursday.
The JeffCo league title chase is looking like a good one and several important matchups will set the course for February this week. Wheat Ridge is undefeated in league play through three games but will get a tough test Wednesday when they take on rival Golden. Senior Alex Morales leads the Farmers with 17.4 points per game, and Dominic Bronk, Westin Miller, and Dominic Cross all average double digits as well. Bronk also averages a double-double with 10.6 rebounds a night as well. Cross leads them in assists with 4.3 per game. Golden is led by freshman star Alan Acevedo who puts up 12.4 a game. Kevin Mulligan and Ben McLaughlin also put up 11.6 and 10.6 points a night. Mulligan is also the Demons’ leader in rebounds and assists, averaging 5.5 and 3.2 respectively.
Golden is 17-2 against Wheat Ridge in the MaxPreps era, but the last two games for the Farmers were their first two wins.
Wheat Ridge also takeS on D’Evelyn on Friday – the Jaguars sit behind only the Farmers and Golden in the league standings.
D’Evelyn is 6-8 but has played well in 2020 – they’re 4-1 in the new year. They take on a rebuilding Standley Lake team tonight before their Friday tilt with Wheat Ridge. The Jaguars are paced offensively by Luke Kjellsen and Sandy Dinegar, who both put up about 11 points a night. Dinegar and Kjellsen also lead D’Evelyn in rebounding, with 6.2 and 4.2 per game respectively. Sam Belmonte averages 3.8 assists, good for third in all of 4A JeffCo.
The final top game of the week is in the mountains when Steamboat Springs meets Glenwood Springs on Saturday. The Sailors and Demons are at the top of the Western Slope, and the league title will likely be decided between this game and their rematch on February 15th. Both teams are coming in red-hot – Glenwood Springs dropped their first two games of the season to 5A clubs, and has only fallen to 4A RPI #1 Longmont since. The Sailors started 2-7 but haven’t lost since January 2nd, knocking off Northern teams in Silver Creek and Niwot, and rolling through the early part of their league schedule.
Steamboat has two players in double digits – Dawson Lindquist and Jakob Kreissig put up just over 10 points a game. Lindquist also leads them in rebounding, with 5.9 per game. Ethan Pyles leads Steamboat in both assists and rebounds a night – with 3.4 and 1.6 respectively.
Glenwood Springs has a player near the top of the Western Slope in most statistical categories. John Ieule is third in the league in scoring with 14.4 PPG and leads the league in assists/game, Will Narvaez gets 9 rebounds per game, and Mitchell Burt has hit 26 threes.
Historically, the matchup is relatively evenly matched, but the Demons have the 17-13 edge in the MaxPreps era. The two split the series last year, but if one team can sweep, they should win the Western Slope.
