Only a few short days remain in the boys lacrosse season, and it’s going to be a mad dash to the finish.
The semifinals are set in Class 5A and 4A, with all four games taking place Saturday at Peter Barton Field at the University of Denver.
Then, on Monday, the state championship games will take place on the same field.
In 5A, top-seeded Valor Christian will take on No. 4 Arapahoe in one semifinal, and defending state champion Cherry Creek battles No. 3 Regis Jesuit in the other.
In 4A, ninth-seeded Cheyenne Mountain – fresh off an upset of No. 1 Air Academy – looks to reclaim the dominance it experienced when it claimed titles from 2021-23. The Red-Tailed Hawks battle Lutheran, with No. 2 Evergreen and No. 3 Grand Junction tangling in the other semi.
Here is a brief overview of each of the four games:
Class 5A
No. 1 Valor Christian vs. No. 4 Arapahoe, Saturday, 3 p.m., Saturday
Valor Christian is attempting to reach a fourth consecutive 5A title game. The Eagles fell to Cherry Creek last May, but the Eagles (15-2) are riding a 12-game winning streak into the semifinals that includes a 16-4 rout of Mountain Vista on Wednesday night. On the season, Valor has outscored its opponents 259-73, and its only two losses came to out-of-state opponents. Four players had at least 26 goals going into Wednesday, and sophomore Eliot Fuhs’ 39 points led the way. Senior Ian Stefonowicz had allowed just more than four goals a game. … Arapahoe (15-2) has only dropped games to fellow semifinalists Cherry Creek and Regis Jesuit. The Warriors handled No. 5 Lakewood 13-7 on Wednesday in the quarterfinals, breaking a 4-4 tie with a second-half scoring blitz. Senior Nicholas Parker’s 54 goals led the team going into the contest with Lakewood, and senior Nicholas Pangborn allows just more than five goals a game. Arapahoe reached the semis a year ago, falling 11-8 to Valor Christian.
No. 2 Cherry Creek vs. No. 3 Regis Jesuit, Saturday, 5:30 p.m., Saturday
The Bruins are pursuing a second consecutive state championship, and opponents have been hard-pressed to stop them. Cherry Creek (15-2) has won 13 in a row since a pair of out-of-state loss in mid-March. The squad didn’t play an in-state opponent until April 7, and save for a 9-8 nail-biter over the Raiders in the regular-season finale, no one has come close to knocking the team off its perch. A 15-5 victory over Erie in the quarterfinals set up the rematch with Regis Jesuit. Junior Wyatt Branish had 56 goals and 45 assists going into the quarters. … Regis Jesuit (15-2) played Creek as tough as anyone in the first matchup. The Raiders, who won their first 11 games before dropping a contest to Valor Christian, dominated Fairview 20-11 on Wednesday. Junior Ryan Olsen stopped 14 shots in the game. Senior William Wilson and sophomore Will Cornell had combined for 155 points going into Wednesday.
Class 4A
No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain vs. No. 5 Lutheran, 10 a.m., Saturday
Cheyenne Mountain (12-6) started the spring season with four losses in its first seven games. Since then, the team has won nine of 11, including a 6-3 victory over Lutheran on April 17. The Hawks downed No. 8 Steamboat Springs 10-7 in the quarterfinals before exploding for a 17-6 triumph over the No. 1 Kadets. Senior Weber Rowell scored four goals in that contest and senior Liam Morrison had two goals and five assists. Senior Walt Cameron stopped 14 of the 20 shots he faced. Rowell’s 61 points lead Cheyenne Mountain overall. … Lutheran (14-3) started the season with 10 consecutive victories, but the loss to the Hawks started a skid of three defeats in four games. The Lions held off Golden 7-6 in the second round, but an impressive 8-3 victory over No. 4 Aspen sent the squad into the semis. Junior Brody Kline had three goals and four assists in that contest and Tyler Mitchell made nine saves. Kline has 56 points on the season and freshman Brooks Honbarrier has 43 points.
No. 2 Evergreen vs. No. 3 Grand Junction, 12:30 p.m., Saturday
Evergreen is back in the semis for the second consecutive season. The Cougars (14-3) fell to league rival Dakota Ridge in this spot in 2024, but a nine-game winning streak has the team playing at its best. Junior Emmitt Windley’s three goals and an assist keyed a 6-4 victory over Battle Mountain in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Cody Cain’s 17 saves keyed a strong defensive effort. Windley (56 points) and senior Jon Alby (55 points) provide the scoring punch for Evergreen. … Grand Junction may just be the hottest team in the classification though, as the Tigers (16-1) haven’t lost since March 16. That setback came to Telluride, which Grand Junction upended 9-7 in the quarterfinals behind three goals each from juniors Paxton Webber and Jack Steury. Freshman Harrison Rogers stopped 13 of the 20 shots the Miners put on net. Webber has 58 goals and 51 assists this spring and Adyn Cassity has 53 goals.
