There’s a chasm between the records of boys soccer teams fighting for the final postseason spot in Class 5A. And plenty of chaos left to be sorted.
No. 32 Valor Christian is 2-7-2 and is currently aiming for one of the 32 postseason spots in the upcoming 5A playoffs, which starts in two weeks.
The Eagles aren’t guaranteed a playoff spot even if they remain at No. 32 and may need to leapfrog No. 31 Mountain Vista to get in. Because the 5A-4A The 5A-4A fields are made up of 23 at-large bids and nine automatic bids from league play, it means there’s room for bid stealers outside the top 32 of CHSAA’s rankings.
One league — the 5A/4A Colorado League — will qualify one of No. 34 Adams City (8-3-1, 4-2), No. 41 Gateway (7-6-1, 5-2) and No. 54 Aurora Central (2-10-1, 2-4), per CHSAA’s bulletin.
Fighting for at-large bids, No. 31 Mountain Vista is currently ahead of Valor Christian as well as No. 33 Liberty (7-4), No. 34 Rocky Mountain (5-4-3) and Adams City (8-3-1).
Mountain Vista (5-5-2) will finish play in the 5A/4A Continental League, which has No. 4 Regis Jesuit (10-0-1) in the driver’s seat. Valor Christian will face No. 36 Chatfield (4-5-3) on Tuesday before playing in a mini tournament between teams in the 5A Jefferson County League, which was won for a third straight year by No. 3 Ralston Valley (11-0-1).
Left on the Lancers’ schedule are two 5A teams not in the playoff picture as well as 4A No. 15 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 19 Rampart. Rocky Mountain’s best shot to jump would be with a win over No. 15 Fossil Ridge on Thursday.
Adams City, of course, could give itself a chance to nab an at-large bid with an upset win over No. 5 Legacy on Friday. But getting in with the 5A/4A Colorado League’s 5A bid is probably a bigger possibility.
Let’s look at the other three classification’s bubbles ahead of the end of the regular season on Oct. 25.
Class 4A
No. 32 Frederick (4-6-1) is sitting in the No. 32 spot thanks to its recent win over No. 23 Longmont. The Golden Eagles have a strong final stretch that should aid their ranking, including a home game against No. 3 Silver Creek on Tuesday.
Skyview (6-5-1), at 33, will likely need a perfect finish to have any chance to catch them in the standings with two 5A teams not in the playoff picture and 2A No. 7 Lotus School for Excellence left on schedule.
The Wolverines lead the entire 5A/4A Colorado League standings at 5-0, but since there are only two 4A teams (Skyview and Thornton), and not three, the league does not get an automatic qualifier in the 4A playoffs.
Class 3A (21 at-large bids, 11 automatic qualifiers)
Mitchell, at No. 32 in the rankings, is looking to make the postseason for the first time since 2017. The Marauders lost to No. 10 The Classical Academy last week before beating 4A No. 60 Sierra 10-0.
The team does not have its goal scorers listed from its 10-goal win over the Stallions. But coming into it, Salvador Hernandez Santaella had 18 goals, which is still seventh-best in the state.
The Marauders have a sizable lead for the No. 32 spot, but No. 33 Basalt (4-6-1) and No. 34 Rifle could make moves. The Longhorns beat the Bears (4-7-1) last week, and now their best shot to jump will come on Thursday against No. 4 Steamboat Springs.
Class 2A (16 at-large bids, eight automatic qualifiers)
Currently sitting at No. 24 is Fountain Valley (3-5-1). The Danes have lost their first three games of this month but should get help from a tough schedule down the stretch, which includes No. 9 Colorado Springs Christian and No. 7 Lotus School for Excellence.
However, No. 25 Grand Valley (5-3-3) looks like a bid-stealer as it can clinch the 2A Western Slope title outright along with a guaranteed postseason spot with a win or draw against No. 30 Moffat County (5-5-1) on Tuesday. GV won the first meeting between the two teams last month behind a goal from Andy Quintanilla, who leads the team with 11 this season.
No. 26 Nederland (6-4, 3-0) could also get in if it can win the 2A portion of the 3A/2A Foothills League. A postseason spot for the Panthers may be on the line when they face No. 19 Loveland Classical (5-6-1, 2-1) on Friday.
