ARVADA — Softball is a simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.
The latter was true Tuesday at Arvada West High School. Chaparral and A-West battled each other and the rain in the non-league game. A nearly 1-hour rain/lightning delay paused action in the bottom of the first inning with Chaparral leading 1-0, but A-West had the bases loaded and no outs.
Eventually things got going and the Wildcats (4-0 record) piled up four runs in both the first and second innings to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

Sophomore Isabella MacNeil had a big 2-run single to cap off the 4-run bottom of the first inning as the Wildcats batted around. Junior Skarlette Arenas, sophomore Lena Guyer, freshman Savanna Pena and MacNeil each drove in a run in the bottom of the second inning to extend the lead to 8-1 as the Wildcats set 10 batters to the plate.
Arenas drove in her second run with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, but the rain intensified and the game was eventually suspended with the Wildcats having the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the third inning.
After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, A-West senior pitcher Morgan Farr settled in giving up just one hit over the second and third innings.
Chaparral (5-2) and A-West will attempt to find a date to pick up the game where it left off.
The rain was the only thing that kept the Wildcats from getting off to their best start since 2023 when A-West began the season with an 8-game winning streak.
A-West is scheduled for a busy end of the week. The Wildcats will play in the Broomfield Invite coming up on Friday and Saturday. A-West squares off against Mountain Vista and Horizon on Friday before closing out the tournament versus Highlands Ranch on Saturday.
