Eight is enough at least when it comes to the Colorado High School Activities Class 5A, 4A and 3A football state playoffs.

Each class has eight teams remaining and all are on the same mission to win state championships.

All the games should be full of some drama and twists and turns and here is a closer look at some games that provide the most intrigue.

Class 5A

No. 5 Valor Christian (9-2) vs. No. 4 Legend (10-1), 1 p.m., Saturday at Echo Park

It is not a surprise that Valor is in the quarterfinals – the Eagles are making their 13th appearance in 14 seasons. Valor also has won eight football state titles since 2009 and most recently in 2018.

Valor sped past Erie 70-28 last week, thanks to sophomore QB Titus Huard accounted for five touchdowns. Huard has thrown for 1,655 yards and 16 TDs and added three TDs rushing.

Chase Hanosh has a team-high 1,151 yards and 12 TDs. The top receiver for Valor is Cash Spence who has 56 receptions for 871 yards and nine scores.

Legend, which is riding a seven-game winning streak since losing to Arvada West (35-34) on Sept. 12, counters with QB D.J. Bordeaux. The senior has thrown for 1,958 yards and 27 TDs.

The Titans top rusher is Ryken Banks. The senior has 1,203 yards rushing and 19 TDs. Legend’s top receiver is Kellen Marchand who has 32 receptions for 624 yards and 11 scores.

The winner of Valor and Legend will play the victor of top-seeded Cherry Creek and Fairview on Nov. 29 in the semifinals.

Class 4A

No. 3 Palmer Ridge (11-0) at No. 6 Broomfield, noon, at Don Breese Stadium

Palmer Ridge was considered to be a state championship contender at the beginning of the season and that story line has stayed true.

The Bears are sporting a perfect record, and they will try and keep it on track against a stingy Broomfield squad.

The Bears advanced to the state quarterfinals for the sixth straight season. Palmer Ridge has three state football championships on his resume in 2017, 2018 and 2019 – all in 3A.

Palmer Ridge escaped the upset big by Mesa Ridge last week, claiming a narrow 19-16 win.

The Bears’ offense is powered by QB Cole Harris. The senior has thrown for 1,390 yards and 19 TDs. Harris also has 418 yards rushing and five TDs.

Jackson Mabe leads the team with 935 yards and 15 TDs. Zak Crissler is pacing the Bears with 48 catches for 761 yards and five scores.

Broomfield’s Matthew Merilatt has thrown for 1,128 yards and 12 TD, but will miss the remainder of the year dude to injury.

The Eagles, who have losses to Erie 26-25 and Riverdale Ridge 16-13, are fueled by freshman Kashus Clarvoe who has gained 1,668 yards on the ground and 18 TDs.

Receiver Gavin Montoya has 26 catches for 586 yards and six scores.

The winner of this matchup will get the winner between No. 2 Montrose and No. 7 Monarch.

Class 3A

No. 5 Holy Family (10-1) at No. 4 Mead (9-2), 1 p.m., Saturday

These two teams have no surprises between each other. Holy Family defeated Mead 27-21 on Oct. 3.

Holy Family’s only loss was when it was upset on the road by Pueblo East (35-14) on Sept. 25.

Since that surprising defeat Holy Family has strung together seven consecutive wins.

The Tigers have a strong offense led by sophomore QB Kaden Hopkin has thrown for 2,164 yards and 15 TDs. His top target is Nick Leopardi who has 24 catches for 629 yards and eight scores.

Mead, who suffered its second loss to top-seeded Windsor 23-0 on Halloween, is fueled by Noah Chapala. The junior has 160 carries for 1,201 yards and 13 scores.

Seniors Eli Davis (21 catches, 515 yards and nine TDs) and Ryan St. Aubin (25 catches, 467 yards and six TDs) are Mead’s top receivers.

The Holy Family-Mead winner moves on to play the winner between No. 1 Windsor and No. 9 Pueblo South.
