Katey Valdez hit a big milestone over the weekend.
The Doherty senior earned the 100th victory of her girls wrestling career on the way to the 105-pound championship at the Vista Ridge Alpha Female tournament.
Valdez pinned her way into the finals, where she posted a 20-1 tech fall victory over Bennett’s Emma Faczak. The Spartan standout won a state championship in 2023 before missing last season because of injury.
“I wasn’t expecting to get my 100th win [Saturday],” Valdez said. “It was a really great experience. You only get to do it once.”
Broken Arrow (Okla.) dominated the overall event with 290 points, with Chatfield finishing runner-up at 161 points. Ryen Hickey (145) finished first in her weight class. Pine Creek had two first-place finishes in Gia Gabel (110) and Melanie Marin Lopez (190).
With the state tournament now one month away, here is a quick glance back at the week that was:
Boys
Pueblo Centennial Invitational
Pueblo East, the top-ranked team in Class 4A in the On The Mat rankings, captured the Pueblo Centennial Invitational with 298.5 points, outdistancing 2A’s Cedaredge at 211.5.
Featuring a number of top-ranked wrestlers from around the state, the competition wasn’t lacking. East’s Manuel Amaro, ranked second in 4A at 113, topped 2A’s No. 1 AJ Jaramillo of Dolores Huerta Prep. At 126, East’s Jason Soto, topped No. 2 DJ Snider of Sand Creek. Devan Lopez, ranked first at 132, downed Ethan Hice of Cedaredge, and No. 1 Niko Fernandez won the 138 title. Michael McCullough was first at 215.
Other top-ranked winners included Sand Creek’s Tristan Pino (106), La Junta’s Jordan Gamez (120), Pueblo Central’s David Sanchez (150) and Sand Creek’s Brandon Dean (157).
At 285, Jackson Downs of Air Academy pinned 4A No. 1 Grant Gordon of Mead.
Arvada West Invitational
Grandview held off 5A’s top-ranked Pomona to claim the A-West Invitational by 7.5 points.
The third-ranked Wolves finished with 266 points to the Panthers’ 258.5. Windsor was third with 193 points.
Grandview received first-place finishes from JR Ortega (120), Gunner Lopez (157), Charlie Herting (175) and Leland Day (285). Pomona’s Lincoln Valdez (106), Logan Dellow (113), Derek Barrows (144) and Kalob Ybarra (165) took first. Ybarra, ranked first in 5A, posted a 10-0 major decision over 4A’s top-ranked Robert Kendall of Windsor.
Tournament of Champions (Utah)
A handful of top-10 Colorado programs competed in the Tournament of Champions in Utah, with 4A’s second-ranked Roosevelt finishing third. 2A’s No. 4 North Fork was fifth.
Roosevelt’s Malakii Martin (138) and top-ranked Chris Lalonde (144) took first. Meeker’s Cade Blunt (175) was the only other in-state champion.
Girls
Arvada West Invitational
Thornton climbed to the top of the team race at the A-West Invitational, finishing with 154 points.
Brighton (134) was second, followed by Pomona (127), Douglas County (123) and Mesa Ridge (122).
The Trojans’ Brooklyn Gustafson (115) and Kaida Hull (190) won their respective weight classes. Brighton’s Isabella Smouse (105), Graciela Melendez-Eisman (145) and Matilda Hruby (155) took first, as did a trio from Mesa Ridge (Alana Myles (110), Reagan Fabrizi (130) and Nevaeh Nomura (140)) and Douglas County (Jylian Cabral (120), Mikiera Miller (135) and Emylee Farias Ferreira (170).
Tournament of Knights
Loveland rolled to the team title at the Tournament of Knights at Severance, taking home two firsts.
The Red Wolves, ranked fifth in 5A, had strong tournaments from Mireya Estrada at 145 pounds and Annabelle Gerard at 170, both of whom won. Mead’s Renee Hudson (110), Erin Young (120) and Grace Sierra (125) won their weight classes to lead the team to second place.
Strasburg’s top-ranked Vivienne Gitke (140) and Madilyn Gitke (155) paced 4A’s third-ranked program.
