For the sixth time in the 2024 football season, a No. 1 team has fallen. Who needs the rankings??
No. 4 Roosevelt’s win over No. 1 Holy Family was the storyline of the night, showing that there is more parity in Class 3A than perhaps most of us thought heading into the year.
Keeping Holy Family at the No. 1 position in the Colorado Preps rankings has been a pretty logically sound decision by the voters. They’re the champs and they earn the right to sit at the top until proven otherwise.
Roosevelt provided proof that several teams in the classification are championship worthy. And they fought every bit for that win.
Tigers quarterback Monte Samaras broke for an early 80-yard touchdown run to take a 7-3 lead. After Roosevelt went up 10-7, Samaras found Nate Welch for a 2-yard touchdown pass to put Holy Family back up.
But the Roughriders took control soon after, building a 24-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Tigers got to within three points with eight minutes to play, but Roosevelt held tough and a pick-6 helped secure the win.
“Milo Pascual jumped a route in the flat and took it to the crib for the game-winning play,” coach Lane Wasinger told Kevin Shaffer on the Scoreboard Show.
Windsor has already suffered a loss after entering the season as the No. 2 team in the classification and No. 3 Green Mountain lost this week to 4A No. 7 Dakota Ridge.
Let’s not forget that also lurking out there is the likes of Lutheran, Mead and Thompson Valley. The top end of the 3A ranks is full of talented football teams and the next seven weeks are going to be a blast.

2A chalk rules the day

Handful of upsets
