For the last two weekends, the baseball playoff fields for Class 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A have been whittled down little by little. Heading into the final weekend of the spring season – and the athletic calendar as a whole – each class has four teams with a chance to emerge as state champions.

Below is a brief overview of what to look for when games resume Friday morning at various sites throughout the state.

Class 5A

Site: All-Star Park, Lakewood

Teams remaining: Regis Jesuit, Cherry Creek, Prairie View, Grandview

How we got here: A 3-0 win over Cherry Creek last Saturday sent Regis Jesuit straight into the championship game and the Raiders will see how things play out on Friday to determine their opponent.

Luke Reasbeck was solid in a complete game on the mound and will likely get the ball at some point again this weekend. Grandview and Prairie View beat Chaparral and Cherokee Trail to advance to the second weekend. Grandview got a big win over Fort Collins on Saturday to also remain alive.

The Thunderhawks and Wolves will open the 5A games on Friday morning with the winner getting a shot at Cherry Creek to advance to Saturday’s state title game.

The Bruins are batting .329 as a team, but were limited to just two hits against the Raiders last week. Each team has a 3-0 win against the other this season so if Creek gets by the Prairie View/Grandview winner, it could be a heck of a battle come Saturday.

Class 4A

Site: Erdle Field, United States Air Force Academy

Teams remaining: Holy Family, Golden, Pueblo County, Falcon

How we got here: Seldom-used Holy Family pitcher Brendan Ward was the story in northern Colorado Springs as he pitched a gem to knock off top-seeded Windsor on Friday. That win propelled the Tigers into the second day with ace Brady Hudson still available. The Tigers gave him plenty of offense to work with, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second to get an 11-6 win over Falcon and head straight to the state title game.

The Falcons will get the winner of Pueblo County and Golden, who are also still alive in the 4A tournament. Both teams flashed hot bats in their elimination games last Saturday as County beat Windsor 17-15 while Golden rolled by Palisade 15-5. Falcon has already beat both Pueblo County and Golden in the 4A state tournament.

Class 3A

Site: Butch Butler Field, Greeley

Teams remaining: Eaton, University, Coal Ridge, Resurrection Christian

How we got here: The wind blew Eaton’s way last week as the three-time defending champion beat University 2-0 to land in the 3A title game. University had a pair of thrilling wins last weekend, first beating Colorado Academy then turning to Gage Viken to slow down Berthoud.

Resurrection Christian advanced to the second after beating Forge Christian then finding a ton of offense in a 12-7 win over Berthoud. Coal Ridge found itself down 6-2 against The Classical Academy but chipped away at the lead and grabbed a walk-off win.

The Cougars and Titans will meet in the first game of the day on Friday and Coal Ridge is hoping for a repeat of last Friday’s opener where it rolled to an 11-0 win over Rez.

Class 2A

Site: Hobbs Field/CSU-Pueblo Rawlings Park

Teams remaining: Denver Christian, Limon, Buena Vista, Lyons

How we got here: Lyons got a strong performance from Wyatt Waters to beat previously unbeaten Limon, which shifted the landscape of the 2A tournament. The Lions couldn’t keep that momentum against Denver Christian, so the Thunder are set to defend their 2A championship.

Limon will face Buena Vista in Friday’s first game at Hobbs Field. The winner will get Lyons and the winner of that game will move over to CSU-Pueblo’s Rawlings Park to take on Denver Christian for 2A baseball supremacy.
