Mother Nature was the major winner on Friday as most of the 4A and 5A girls’ basketball schedule was postponed but she was joined by several other clubs who posted crucial conference wins.

CLASS 1A

  • Fleming/Briggsdale:  Both clubs picked up easy wins to remain tied for the North Central lead.  The Wildcats downed Weldon Valley 62-29 and the Falcons dropped Peetz 70-15.  Fleming and Briggsdale have split two league meetings so it’s highly likely they will remain tied through the conference season.
  • Kit Carson:  The three-time defending state champions wrapped up another High Plains championship with their 67-43 win at Cheraw.
  • Cotopaxi/Moffat:  Both teams earned conference wins so they remain tied for second place behind Sangre De Cristo in the Southern Peaks.  Cotopaxi dumped Sierra Grande and Moffat moved past Manzanola by identical scores of 65-41.
  • Dove Creek:  The Bulldogs continue to be the top 1A team in the combined San Juan conference.  Their 55-7 blowout of Ouray also kept them one game back of league leading Ignacio.

CLASS 2A

  • Holyoke:  The Dragons did not officially clinch the Lower Platte championship but their win over Merino keeps them in complete control.  Holyoke has league wins over the Rams, Yuma, Wray and Sedgwick County so they’ve beaten the top challengers.
  • Meeker:  They remain alone atop the Western Slope standings following a win over local rival Rangely 51-41.  It was a tough win as the Panthers handed Hotchkiss their first league loss last week.
  • Ignacio:  Another easy win over Ridgway (53-19) kept the Bobcats alone atop the San Juan standings.  They lead Dove Creek by one and topped the Bulldogs in their only meeting of the season earlier this year.
  • Rye:  The Thunderbolts remained perfect in the Santa Fe and overall thanks to their 41-33 win over Fowler.  Rocky Ford opened the night sharing the top spot with Rye and their outcome with Crowley County is not yet known.

CLASS 3A

  • Pagosa Springs:  One has to think the Pirates clinched the Intermountain championship on Friday as they beat Centauri in overtime (57-50).  The win opens up a two-game lead on both the Falcons and Alamosa.  The Pirates have beaten Centauri twice and also took the first game with Alamosa.  Even if they stumble in the rematch with the Moose, they will remain alone in first.
  • Alamosa:  The Moose took advantage of the Centauri loss and moved into a second place with the Falcons by beating Monte Vista 68-18.  Centauri still has the tiebreak as they beat Alamosa in game one with game two set for next Saturday.  They also visit Pagosa Springs the night before.
  • Delta:  The Panthers stayed the lone unbeaten in the Western Slope with a nice 51-29 win over Moffat County.  Delta now leads Cedaredge and Roaring Fork by one game and have wins over both.  Moffat County slides into a fourth-place tie with Grand Valley and Coal Ridge.  All three have two league losses.
  • University:  The 56-41 win over Platte Valley kept the Bulldogs alone atop the rugged Patriot conference.  The Bulldogs are 8-0 and can clinch the conference crown by beating either Sterling next Friday or Valley on the 18th.  They lead Eaton by one game and beat the Reds in overtime in an early league game.  Platte Valley now shares third with Brush.
  • Buena Vista:  The Demons picked up a key win over La Junta 38-20 and now sit alone in fourth inside the Tri-Peaks behind the big three of St Mary’s, Vanguard and Manitou Springs.  It’s an important spot though as the top four teams earn byes into the district quarterfinals and do not have to battle through a play-in game.

CLASS 4A

  • Pueblo West:  The Cyclones dusted off Pueblo Centennial 95-3 to keep sole possession of the South Central.  They improved to 5-0 and have already created a two-game edge on Pueblo South and Pueblo East.
  • Durango:  The Demons toppled Grand Junction Central 45-33 to remain in a three-way tie with Fruita Monument and Montrose atop the Southwestern league.  They face Montrose tomorrow.

CLASS 5A

  • Fruita Monument:  As mentioned in the 4A division, Fruita Monument shares the Southwestern lead with 4A rivals Montrose and Durango.  They remained in the mix thanks to a 48-16 win over Grand Junction.
  • Fossil Ridge:  The Sabercats entered the night as one of three unbeatens remaining in the Front Range lead.  They stayed there with a 36-17 home win over Fort Collins.  The other two leaders are Fairview and Broomfield.  They were slated to play on Friday but the game was postponed until Monday evening.  That winner will remain tied with Fossil Ridge in first.
