The play-in round for Class 6A and 5A girls basketball is Wednesday, with seeds 25 through 40 aiming to carve out their spot in Saturday’s 32-team first round.
The remaining classifications finish the regular season on Saturday.
In this week’s look-in on big-school girls basketball, we’ll dive into the play-in round for 6A and 5A. Below that, we’ll take a look at a couple of the most meaningful 4A games remaining before its 32-team postseason begins next week.
Class 6A (play-in round on Wednesday)
No. 40 Fairview at No. 25 Eaglecrest, 6 p.m.
No. 39. Denver North at No. 26 Fossil Ridge, 6 p.m.
No. 38 Denver South at No. 27 Chaparral, 6 p.m.
No. 37 Boulder at No. 28 Overland, 6 p.m.
Eaglecrest (13-10) is led by Jada Bobb, who has 11 double doubles this winter, including in four of her last five games coming into the postseason. Behind her, the Raptors won their final two games of the regular season but couldn’t pass up No. 24 Erie for the final guaranteed spot in the first round.
Fossil Ridge (14-9), meanwhile, was pushed into the play-in after losing three of its last four games. Elli Johnson (12.6 PPG, 7.4 RPG) leads the Sabercats, who are 8-3 at home this season. In the play-in, they draw one of the hotter teams in the classification, Denver North (14-8), which won eight of its final nine games behind senior Adriana Ortiz (15.1, 6.3).
Chaparral (13-10) is headlined by do-it-all standout Lauren Thompson, who leads her team in points (13.8), rebounds (6.1), assists (4.3) and steals (4.4).
Overland (13-10) struggled in league play, finishing 1-6 in the 6A/5A Centennial League. But it has a few nice wins on its resume, including ones over No. 15 Doherty, No. 24 Erie and No. 30 ThunderRidge. The Trailblazers get Boulder (14-9), which finished second to Brihanna Crittendon and No. 14 Riverdale Ridge in the Rocky Mountain League.
No. 36 Rangeview at No. 29 Pueblo West, 6:30 p.m.
No. 35 Poudre at No. 30 ThunderRidge, 7 p.m.
No. 34 Vista PEAK Prep at No. 31 Legacy, 6 p.m.
No. 33 Horizon at No. 32 Chatfield, 6 p.m.
Pueblo West (12-11), behind senior Jamie Suazo (9.9 PPG, 5.7 RPG), won its final three games to ensure a home game in the play-in round. She’s had at least 10 points in seven of her last nine games.
ThunderRidge (11-12) went 5-5 in the 6A/5A Continental League and 4-4 in its last eight games of the season. Candace Baker (11.4 PPG) has scored at least 11 in three of her past four games. It opens with a tough matchup against Poudre (10-13), which has won two straight, including a win over No. 26 Fossil Ridge last week.
Legacy (13-10) relies heavily on senior star Olivia Mortensen (23.6 PPG, 12.7 RPG), who scored 40 in a 55-52 win over No. 37 Boulder on Saturday.
Chatfield (9-14) being at home against Horizon (13-10) in its play-in game, meanwhile, may not matter much. The Mustangs went just 2-7 on their own court this winter, while Horizon was .500 on the road. Chatfield’s sophomore guard Sadie Goodwin (13 PPG) is 30 of 95 from behind the arc and 56 of 85 from the free-throw line.
Class 5A
No. 40 Battle Mountain at No. 25 Greeley Central, 5:30 p.m.
No. 39 Pueblo County at No. 26 Widefield, 6 p.m.
No. 38 Cheyenne Mountain at No. 27 Glenwood Springs, 6 p.m.
No. 37 Dakota Ridge at No. 28 Sierra, 5:30 p.m.
Greeley Central (12-11) is led in scoring by senior Madison Sepeda (19.1 PPG), who has 1,254 career points coming into the postseason. She’s pushed the Wildcats to 12 wins this winter, their most since 2019-20.
Widefield (14-9), meanwhile, missed out securing a spot in the first round down the stretch, losing three straight before finishing the regular season with a 32-point win over Harrison. Isabella Monk (15.6 PPG) had a career-high 41 points in the Gladiators’ finale.
Glenwood Springs (12-11) has seen a late scoring surge from freshman Ivee Enewold (6.8 PPG), who averaged 15.3 points over her final three games of the season.
Sierra (14-9), in its play-in game, faces Dakota Ridge (10-13) for the second time this season. In their first meeting back in December, the Stallions won, 43-39, as Deja Burns (6.9 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 6.2 BPG) nearly had a triple double with nine points, 11 rebounds and 16 blocks. Burns’ 6.2 blocks per game is 14th-best in the nation this winter.
No. 36 Regis Groff at No. 29 Eagle Valley, 5:30 p.m.
No. 35 Grand Junction Central at No. 30 Severance, 6:30 p.m.
No. 34 Niwot at No. 31 Aurora Central, 6 p.m.
No. 33 Longmont at No. 32 Grand Junction, 6 p.m.
Grand Junction (8-15) has eight wins after combining for just nine over the previous four seasons. In the play-in it gets Longmont (7-16) at home, where the Tigers went 6-7 this winter.
Eagle Valley (12-11) moved up the rankings late in the season thanks to six wins over its last seven games. It beat No. 40 Battle Mountain (10-13) in its finale last week as senior Addison Mandeville (10.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG) scored 15 points and had seven rebounds.
Severance (7-16), meanwhile, is hosting its play-in game despite having just one win since Jan. 28. It faces Grand Junction Central (7-16), which won two of its last three games, including in overtime over Grand Junction on Feb. 14.
Aurora Central (13-8) had won five of six before a loss to 4A No. 10 Skyview in its finale. Jamaea Johnson-Gonzales is averaging 16.1 points and 10.5 rebounds for the Trojans. She had 10 double doubles this winter.
4A’s most meaningful games this week
No. 1 University at home against 3A No. 7 Highland, Wednesday at 6 p.m.; TBA opponent on Saturday.
The Bulldogs are 21-0, two wins away from finishing the regular season undefeated.
They’ll look to end Highland’s three-game winning streak on Wednesday. And with a win there, they’ll play in the Patriot League championship game on Saturday.
No. 31 Coal Ridge at No. 7 Delta, Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Coal Ridge (10-12) may have already done enough to secure one of the last spots in the postseason field, with a slight lead in the rankings over No. 32 Eagle Ridge Academy (8-14) and No. 33 Montezuma-Cortez (6-16) and only a game against No. 8 Delta (16-6) remaining. Montezuma-Cortez, meanwhile, finishes at 3A No. 38 Bayfield on Friday and the Warriors are at No. 21 Colorado Academy Thursday.
The Panthers, in turn, are hoping to hold onto home-court advantage. Currently, they are one of the last two of eight teams who are projected to host the first and second rounds of the 4A postseason. D’Evelyn (16-6) lurks at No. 9, with a home game against No. 39 Elizabeth on Wednesday.
