March came in like a lamb and, well, out like a lamb, too.

There are no Cubs in the traditional spring proverb, but as it relates to Colorado prep girls golf, the Timnath Cubs made their presence known in the first post-winter month of the calendar year.

There’s hope within, certainly, that come the state tournament in May they’ll be known as the biggest natural force in the state.

CheyAnne Schrick, just a junior and the defending Class 3A champion, is leading a young team to great heights so far as Timnath already has won four tournaments — most recently the Longs Peak League event at Loveland’s Olde Course on Wednesday. Schrick carded a 77, but three other THS girls shot in the 70s (one, Sienna Schrick, shot 78 which didn’t even count toward the team’s score in the event).

Freshman Payton Landon won the Resurrection Christian Invite at RainDance National just one day earlier, and fellow frosh Isla Carlucci shot 1-under 71 to tie CheyAnne Schrick atop the leaderboard at the Windsor Invitational the day before that.

It’s been an aggressive, eye-opening start for Timnath, who did not qualify as a team for the state tournament last year.

Meanwhile, the sport has offered some good early competition in general. Defending champs Valor Christian (5A), Riverdale Ridge (4A) and Holy Family (3A) have nothing to complain about so far. Nor does Ella Scott of Valor (5A individual champ), Landry Frost of Air Academy (4A), Schrick, or Sophia Lee of Colorado Academy (2A). While Colorado Preps will take a look at the weekly action from now until May, here’s a recap of the early tournaments that have been completed.

The Big Kahuna (Colorado Preps’ biggest tournament of the week)

The Cheyenne Mountain Invitational was conquered by a 2A player, while the event brought out some heavy hitters from 5A, 4A and 3A as well. Manitou Springs’ Addison Dorsey, a junior, shot a 3-under 68 to win her first event of the season. Pine Creek freshman Henly Wilson shot 74 to place second, and Frost was third at 75. Lutheran senior Tess Morris shot 80 in a field with several of last year’s state qualifiers in the field.

Elsewhere

Northfield is off to a great start, as Chanel Carlacci and Natalie Clark have finished top-3 in several events.

Brynn Balliett and Riverdale Ridge won the opening RML match at Thorncreek on March 9, with Balliett shooting 73 to win by 13 strokes. Balliet also won the Broomfield Chilly Chili on March 14 with a 78.

Peyton Mraz, Acadia Curtis and Dannika Nielsen appear to be the trio that is going to bring Holy Family much success this season. They went 1-2-3 at the first Granite Peaks League event March 10 at Broadlands.

Ralston Valley’s Addison Hines won the Eagle Invitational hosted by Valor on March 10, shooting 1-over 73. Valor’s Scott was second at 76, and the Eagles went 2-3-4 to win.

Littleton senior Zoe Bar-Or has stepped right back in this spring as a favorite in Class 3A. She has won a few events already, including the CA Invite at Foothills on March 19.

Eads freshman Reese Barnett debuted on the prep scene with a 73 at La Junta Golf Club on March 23, winning the Swink Golf Classic.

Valor has a couple new names to watch in freshmen Emma Nguyen, who shot even par March 30 at the Ranch CC in Westminster to tie for the win (with Scott) at a Jeffco meet, and Chloe Johnson, whose 74 was good for second place at the Rez invite at RainDance.

Steamboat’s Katharina Cosby won the Devil’s Thumb Invitational March 31, besting Durango’s Jayden Craig and Battle Mountain’s Makena Theyer with her 4-over 76.

Tatum Platt led Cherry Creek to another Centennial League meet victory this week, shooting 73 at Saddle Rock. Smoky Hill freshman Erianna Perez debuted with a runner-up 77.

Mega Bonus (rounds under par)

(No Laying Up)

Lee shot a 64 on March 4 at Flatirons, with seven birdies tied to the round.

Some familiar names, and one new to high school golf, flew to the top of the board at the first Continental League meet March 10 at Aurora Hills. Lilie Cohen (Chaparral) carded a 4-under 68 to win the day, but Ponderosa’s Olivia Meyering (2-under 70) and Legend freshman Scout Fitzgerald (70) were right on her tail. Seventeen girls shot 79 or better that day.

Bar-Or carded a 2-under 70 at the CA Invite, using five birdies to best a large field.

Cheyanne Schrick’s 3-under 68 at Southridge on March 25 included seven birdies — she birdied three of four par-3s. A few days later, she shot 71 at Pelican Lakes alongside Carlucci. Carlucci had an eagle on the par-5 fifth to highlight her day. Add Landon to the Mega Bonus pool, as she shot 1-under at RainDance.

Dorsey turned in her second in-the-red scorecard Wednesday, winning the Tri-Peaks League event at La Junta Golf Club with a 1-under 69.
