It was a very important night for girls’ basketball teams across Colorado as several teams clinched league championships and others stayed in contention.   We breakdown the scores and indicate the impact on the various conference races.

CLASS 1A

  • The race for fourth in the Southern Peaks is a tight one and LaVeta kept a piece by beating Centennial.  The result leaves the Redskins tied with Antonito and Sierra Grande.  Antonito will also get a forfeit win over Aguilar later this week so they will finish at 6-4.  The winner between LaVeta and Sierra Grande on Friday also gets to 6-4 and then a head-to-head tiebreaker will determine which club gets the higher district seed.  Antonito beat LaVeta but lost to Sierra Grande.

CLASS 2A

  • Denver Christian wrapped up third in the Mile High by beating Dayspring Christian on Wednesday.  The win kept the Thunder one game up on Longmont Christian with one game left.  DC also won the head-to-head matchup with Longmont Christian.

CLASS 3A

  • Manitou Springs secured second in the Tri Peaks with their 30-point win over Vanguard.  Each club had just one loss to champion St Mary’s in league play but the Mustangs now get the #2 seed for districts with Vanguard at #3.  The two could easily meet again in the district semifinals next week.

CLASS 4A

  • Riverdale Ridge avenged a regular season loss to Weld Central as the Ravens advanced to the Colorado 8 league tournament championship game.  They will meet Skyview in the finals on Friday as the Wolverines moved past Conifer.
  • Canon City rolled past Elizabeth 75-12 to remain unbeaten in league play and alone atop the CS Metro.  The Tigers lead Sierra by one game and will face the Stallions to close the regular season on Saturday.
  • Sand Creek stayed perfect (12-0) in the CS Metro and clinched the Pikes Peak crown by beating Palmer Ridge 66-44.  The Scorpions lead both Air Academy and Falcon by three games with two conference games remaining. Air Academy (Lewis Palmer) and Falcon (Cheyenne Mountain) both picked up wins on Wednesday as well.
  • Thompson Valley ran the table on their way to winning the Northern championship.  Their 14th and final win came on Wednesday as they beat Silver Creek 57-24.
  • Golden moved close to finishing third in the Jeffco as they beat D’Evelyn for a second time.  Both teams are 6-5 in conference play but the Demons get third if they win at Wheat Ridge on Friday.

CLASS 5A

  • Cherry Creek avenged their earlier loss to Grandview by beating the Wolves 53-42 on Wednesday.  The win left both teams tied for first and they will likely end up sharing the Centennial league crown.  Arapahoe clinched an upper division as they handled #9 Cherokee Trail 65-38
  • Vista Peak and Thornton both picked up wins on Wednesday so the two remain tied with Rangeview atop the East Metro.  Vista Peak rolled Hinkley and Thornton held off Brighton.
  • Valor Christian’s win over Chatfield put the Eagles at 8-0 as they close the Jeffco slate without a loss.  Ralston Valley also wrapped up second with their win over Dakota Ridge.
  • Fountain Fort Carson remained in the CS Metro by beating Liberty 46-37.  The loss also eliminated the Lancers from the title discussion but they can still play the role of spoiler when they meet Doherty on Thursday.  The Spartans share first with FFC.
