It wouldn’t be spring in Colorado without a snowstorm raging over the Rockies, taking down track meets left and right like a tornado in a trailer park.
Such was the case this past weekend, though some meets did get off the starting line.
A delayed start really benefitted the Altitude Invitational in Timnath.
The host school’s Natalie Washburn was the highlight of the meet. The Timnath senior torched a state-leading 2 minutes, 12.77 seconds to win the 800-meter over a stellar field. Rocky Mountain’s Lindsey Kaines was second in 2:14.17, which was just ahead of Silver Creek’s Chloe Ruth, who finished third in 2:14.49. Collectively, they made for three of the top five times run in Colorado this season.
Likewise, the boys 800 had nearly as many fireworks, with Rocky Mountain sophomore Caleb Emery torching a meet record of 1:55.35 – that’s currently the No. 1 time among sophomores this season. Thompson Valley’s Curtis Smela was a close runner-up, clocking 1:55.48. Those are two of the top five times run in the 800 this season.
The girls 3,200 was another great race with three dipping under 11-minutes, led by Fossil Ridge’s Mia Williams, who clocked 10:51. The performance puts Williams inside the top five in Class 5A.
Three boys dipped under the previous meet record in the 3,200, led by Fort Collins’ Cadel Ruthven, who clocked 9:29.08. Teammate Seth Giles and Fossil Ridge’s Carter Brazelton were hot on his heels, clocking 9:29.52, and 9:30.19.
The wind either helped or hurt some events.
Windsor’s Kiana Cummings swept the sprints, clocking a 12.24 in the 100, and a wind-aided 24.00 in the 200. Windsor’s 4×100 clocked a state-leading 47.42. They also won the 4×400 in 3:56.
The boys 200 was another hotly contested event, with three dipping under the coveted 22-second mark.
Put the state on alert – Prairie View senior Francis Ojowa clocked a 21.59 to win the 200 – that’s the No. 2 time run among all classifications so far.
