The state’s game of the year in boys soccer was on Thursday, as Class 5A No. 1 Boulder traveled to defending champ Broomfield.
In the end, their 1-1 draw left plenty unresolved — perhaps to come back to at a later date. Say deep in the postseason.
In this week’s look-in on boys soccer, we’ll touch on CHSAA’s current top two teams in each classification.
Class 5A
Boulder Panthers: The CHSAA 5A and MaxPreps No. 1 team in the state saw its six-game winning streak come to an end in a 1-1 draw against Broomfield on Thursday.
No biggie. The Panthers (6-0-1) are still in great shape.
They will face former Front League foes in No. 33 Fossil Ridge (on Tuesday) and No. 11 Fairview (Oct. 1) before digging into play in the newly-formed 5A/4A Rocky Mountain League.
No other team in their league is in the top 30 in CHSAA’s 5A or 4A rankings.
Broomfield Eagles: The defending champs have gotten a stellar opening to the season from goalkeeper Evan Kulstad, who has allowed just three goals on 41 shots on target.
After holding Boulder to just a goal on Thursday — after the Panthers came in averaging five per game — the Eagles (7-0-1) host No. 49 Rocky Mountain Tuesday and No. 8 Denver East on Thursday before starting play in the new Granite Peaks League next week.
The Granite Peaks League currently has four teams ranked in CHSAA 5A’s top 20, including No. 7 Legacy, No. 11 Fairview and No. 18 Horizon.
Class 4A
Air Academy Kadets: Senior Ben Brown has had a hand in 13 of his team’s 19 goals this season, with nine goals and four assists of his own.
He’s currently on a four-game goals streak as the Kadets (6-0-1) face No. 34 Rampart on Tuesday.
Silver Creek Raptors: The Raptors (4-1-1) are having another strong start to their season.
Their only loss came to 5A defending champ Broomfield last month.
Through their first four games, eight different players had scored a goal. Last week, they beat 5A No. 25 Monarch 4-2.
They’re at 5A No. 7 Legacy on Oct. 1.
Class 3A
Holy Family Tigers: Oliver Hansen has six goals and two assists and the Tigers (6-0) are ranked No. 1 in the class after going 3-10-2 in 2023.
Stefano Curto had two goals and Hansen had another in a 3-0 win over 5A No. 30 Erie last week.
They host DSST: Conservatory Green on Wednesday.
Stargate School Eagles: How real are the Eagles at No. 2?
More will be known after they face longtime power Kent Denver on Tuesday.
In six games, the Eagles (5-0-1) have outscored teams 26-6. Sophomore Ethan Clem leads the way with seven goals.
Stargate School has never had a winning season since competing at the varsity level in 2018, per MaxPreps. It is ranked as the 27th best team in the state on the site behind 3A teams in Holy Family, The Academy and KIPP Denver Collegiate.
Class 2A
Denver Christian Thunder: The Thunder (6-0-1) reached the semifinals last season before bowing out to eventual 2A champ Crested Butte.
This fall, they’ve won six of their first seven games, with a draw to 3A No. 4 The Academy last week.
Senior Brady Kindig has scored in every game and has 14 goals and five assists on the season.
They are at 3A No. 38 Eagle Ridge Academy on Tuesday.
Forge Christian Fury: The Fury (5-0-1) have gotten six goals and two assists from Thomas Clemens.
Clemens had eight goals and six assists through his first three years at the varsity level.
As part of their start, the Fury opened the year with a 2-0 win over 2A No. 4 Vail Mountain, then beat 2023 2A runner-up Bishop Machebeuf, 6-0, last week.
Their lone draw of the year, meanwhile, came to 4A No. 29 Golden last month.
This week, they’re at 3A No. 14 Prospect Ridge Academy and No. 13 Peak to Peak.
