Girls golfers around the state continue to show competitive spirit while flashing some amazing abilities with their clubs at tournaments large and small. This week saw more performances from freshmen whose names may start to become more recognizable, but several other top contenders seem to be just simply plugging away with consistency as the season hits the midway point.

From all corners of Colorado, here are some of the highlights.

The Big Kahuna

It’s not often you see a team shoot under par collectively for a tournament, but the Rock Canyon girls did just that Thursday at the DU-Highlands Ranch course during the Heather Cho Memorial. The Jaguars combined for a 212 (4-under par), 21 strokes better than Castle View and 22 strokes better than Legend. Even RCHS’ fourth player, junior Kelsey Pringle, shot 79.

Four players shot 79 or better, including a pair from Rye, as the Thunderbolts edged Salida on Thursday in a Tri-Peaks/Santa Fe League invitational at Hollydot. Salida’s Kyndra Johnson won by five strokes, with a 1-over 72.

Lutheran junior Tess Morris went even-par (72) at Cheyenne Shadows, winning the 20-team Fountain-Ft. Carson Lady Trojan Invitational on Thursday. Lutheran won the team crown, as well.

Fossil Ridge and Holy Family were neck-and-neck at the Loveland Invite on Wednesday, but it was Sterling’s Macie Doherty that emerged as the medalist with her round of 77. She had eagles on the par-5 14th and par-5 17th at The Olde Course.

Durango won the Montrose Red Hawk tournament at Black Canyon, with its top three players going 81-82-82. Battle Mountain’s Makena Thayer was the only player in the 70s, carding a 73. The Demons also won the portion of the tournament that was played Monday at Cobble Creek, and Thayer also won that round with a 75 (six players were 79 or better in that round).

Holy Family crushed the competition at Coal Creek during a Granite Peaks League tournament Tuesday, its top four scorers going 76-79-81-83. But it was Legacy freshman Chloe Hartojo who made the biggest splash, winning her first prep tournament by shooting even-par 72. She made birdie on three of four par-3 holes.

Brinnon Cook and Haylee Clark, both of Cherokee Trail, matched each other at 78 for medalist honors Monday as the Centennial League played Foothills.

A super competitive Erie Cocoa Classic on Monday featured Fossil Ridge, Lutheran, Pueblo West, Resurrection Christian, and many more. The Sabercats won by eight strokes over Lutheran at Lake Valley, which saw six players finish between 75 and 79. Morris’ 75 was worthy of medalist, but Doherty was right there at 79, too.
