Very busy and very important day for high school basketball teams as they continue to work through district and state tournaments.  Several semifinal games are on tap in Classes 1A, 2A and 3A and winners of those games advance to next week’s regional and state tournaments.  Colorado Preps will track results in both the boys and girls divisions as games go final.  Check back throughout the day to get updates.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

  • 9:21pm:  South Baca has an easy trip into the 1A District 3 finals.  After a first round bye, the Patriots blew past La Veta 58-12 tonight and will face Springfield in the championship game on Saturday.  Both the Patriots and Longhorns are regional bound.
  • 9:14pm:  Academy has not been pushed inside the 3A Frontier this year and the Wildcats are back in the district finals after beating Arrupe Jesuit 81-43.  They meet will Denver West in the championship game on Saturday.
  • 8:53pm:  Eagle Ridge Academy is the top seed in the 3A Colorado/Confluence bracket and they’re in the championship game by beating Englewood 47-20.  They also qualify for the 32-team state bracket.
  • 8:39pm:  Rye continues to mow through the 2A District 6 bracket as they handle Holly 69-30 in the semifinals.  The Thunderbolts seek a third-straight district championship on Saturday against Hoehne.  They’ve beaten the Farmers twice in lopsided fashion already this year.
  • 8:25pm:  Very strong performance by Merino as they knock out defending state runnerup Fleming 58-41 in a 1A District 4 semifinal.  The Rams move to the district finals against top ranked Briggsdale on Saturday.  Fleming must beat Haxtun on Saturday to reach the regional round and if they do, the Wildcats ironically will be seeded higher than Merino in the regional bracket.  That’s because Fleming had a better RPI at the end of the regular season compared to Merino.  The Rams will be no worse than a third seed in regionals and will get a first round bye.
  • 8:19pm:  Defending 2A state champion Limon is back in the regional round after beating Byers 49-24 in a District 4 semifinal.  The Badgers will meet Denver Christian in the championship game on Saturday.  That contest is at Vista Peak HS.  Byers meets Front Range Christian for third place and another berth in the 32-team regional bracket.
  • 8:14pm:  Denver West and DSST-Byers earn automatic berths in the 3A state tournament next week as both were winners of semifinal games within their respective districts.  Denver West downed Bennett 47-38 in the Frontier bracket and they will likely face Academy in the finals on Saturday.  DSST-Byers held off Strive Prep 39-23 and will probably meet Englewood for the championship in the Colorado/Confluence bracket.
  • 8:01pm:  Mild upset in the 3A Metro district as #3 Jefferson Academy downs #2 Skyview Academy 35-25.  It’s a big win for the Jaguars as they will advance to the regional tournament next week but before will challenge Lutheran for the district title on Saturday.
  • 7:56pm:  Easy win for Simla over Pikes Peak Christian 78-18 gets the Cubs into the 1A District 7 semifinals against #2 Evangelical Christian on Friday.
  • 7:46pm:  Dolores Huerta outlasted Thomas MacLaren 32-25 in overtime and the Spartans now prep for a semifinal date with Fountain Valley tomorrow.  That’s part of the 2A District 7 bracket and the winner will move into the regional round next week.
  • 7:43pm:  Calhan was slated to play Colorado Springs School on Tuesday but weather delayed it twice until tonight.  The Bulldogs gained the 35-26 win and will challenge #1 Peyton in the 2A District 8 semifinals on Friday.
  • 7:42pm:  Olathe gets the expected win over Tellluride (55-8) inside 2A District 3.  The game was delayed from Tuesday but the final score pairs up the semifinals tomorrow.  The Pirates meet #2 Mancos while the other matchup features #1 Cedaredge against #4 Ignacio.  Winners head to the championship game on Saturday.
  • 7:31pm:  Sargent reaches the 2A District 1 championship game with a defensive minded 37-26 win over Del Norte.  The Farmers will face Sanford in the championship game as the Indians scored a win over Monte Vista earlier in the day.  Both teams are headed to regional tournaments win or lose on Saturday.
  • 7:09:  Kit Carson gave up seven points in the first quarter and then seven the rest of the way in beating Cheyenne Wells 32-14.  The win gets the Wildcats into the 1A District 2 finals against top seeded McClave and they will also play in the regionals next week.  Cheyenne Wells battles Cheraw in the third place and only the winner advances to next week.
  • 6:06pm:  Springfield is through the 1A District 3 championship game following a narrow 34-31 win over Kim/Branson.  That win also qualifies the Longhorns to the regional tournament next week.  Kim/Branson remains in contention for a regional berth but they will have to win in the third place game on Saturday.  The second semifinal there features South Baca against La Veta.
  • 5:59pm:  Hoehne gets to the 2A District 6 championship with a solid 52-20 win over Swink.  The Farmers will likely meet unbeaten Rye in the championship game and they lost twice to the Thunderbolts in league activity.  Win or lose that game; Hoehne is still in the regional tournament next week.
  • 5:32pm:  Denver Christian is the latest qualifier to the 2A regional as their 41-18 win over Front Range Christian puts them in the District 4 championship where they will likely face defending champion Limon.  The Badgers face Byers later this evening.
  • 5:13pm:  Top ranked Briggsdale stayed unbeaten on the season and rolled into the 1A District 4 finals by downing Haxtun 56-30.  The Falcons also qualified for the Northeast regional tournament and will be the number one seed in the bracket.  That gives them a first round bye.
  • 4:55pm:  Caprock Academy wins the pigtail game with DeBeque 39-33 so the Eagles advance to the 1A District 1 semifinals against top seeded Dove Creek.   They must upset the Bulldogs to reach the regional tournament as only the top two clubs from the bracket move forward in the playoffs.
  • 4:15pm:  Lutheran rolls past Prospect Ridge 58-31 to win their 3A Metro semifinal.  The Lions easily won the regular season crown and todays win gets them into the 32-team state tournament bracket.
  • 4:12pm:  Sanford is the top seed in 2A District 2 and the Indians rolled Monte Vista 46-16.  The win pushes Sanford into the district finals and into next week’s regional tournament.
  • 4:10pm:  Top seeded McClave downs Cheraw 53-32 to reach the finals of the 1A District 2 Tournament.  As a district finalist, McClave will advance to the Southeast regional tournament next week and serve as the number one seed as those standings are based on RPI numbers at the end of the regular season.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

  • 9:55pm:  Merino is back in the District finals for a third straight year as they down Haxtun 60-45 in Class 1A.  The Rams face off with Briggsdale in the championship game on Saturday.  Haxtun battles Prairie for the third and final regional berth from the District.
  • 9:54pm:  Limon used a 65-41 win over Lotus School to reach the championship game in 2A District 4.  On Saturday, they will seek to avenge a regular season loss to Denver Christian.  The Thunder were winners over Byers earlier today.  Both Limon and Denver Christian are in the regional tournament as will the winner of Lotus School and Byers.
  • 9:08pm:  End of the season means a strong push from Manual in Class 3A.  The Thunderbolts upset top seeded Colorado Academy 69-60 in the Metro semifinals tonight.  They next face Lutheran in the district finals and the win also pushes them into the state tournament.  Despite the loss, Colorado Academy remains in the running to host the first two rounds of the state tournament based on their RPI.
  • 9:06pm:  Lake County is an automatic qualifier to the 2A regional tournament.  The Tigers outlasted Crested Butte 67-65 in overtime; scoring on a nice inbounds play with eight seconds left in the extra session.  Lake County meets Sanford in the district finals on Saturday; Crested Butte looks to rebound and earn a regional berth by beating Del Norte in the third place game.
  • 8:36pm:  Fort Lupton upsets top seeded Englewood 57-48 in the Class 3A Colorado/Confluence bracket.  The Blue Devils qualify for regionals next week and now get set to battle local rival Eagle Ridge Academy for the district championship.
  • 8:32pm:  McClave avenges a conference loss to Wiley tonight with a 39-30 win over the Panthers in the 1A District 2 semifinals.  The Cards are regional bound next week but will first face Granada in a highly anticipated district final on Saturday.
  • 8:31pm:  Dove Creek is easily into the 1A District 1 semifinals as they blasted Nucla 72-18 tonight.  The Bulldogs now face league rival Ouray on Friday in an elimination semifinal.  The teams split two regular season matchups and the rubber game will determine which teams advances to regionals next week.  Only the top two clubs from the bracket go into regionals.
  • 8:07pm:  Denver Jewish Day downed Denver Waldorf 52-44 on Thursday and that pushes them into the 1A District 8 championship game against Belleview Christian on Saturday.  Both teams advance to the regional tournament where they will be cross bracketed with the top two finishers from District 1 which should be Caprock Academy, Ouray or Dove Creek.  Denver Waldorf ends their season with the loss as only the top two clubs play into next week.
  • 7:37pm:  Two more games from the 4A first round delayed from Wednesday have gone final with Mesa Ridge taking out Pueblo East 87-54 and Harrison eliminating Classical Academy 62-32.
  • 7:34pm:  Kim/Branson is the top seed in 1A District 3 and will play for the title after beating La Veta 52-43 on Thursday.  The Mustangs meets Springfield in the championship game and regardless of result, both teams will head to regionals.  La Veta will face Primero for the third berth into regionals.
  • 7:32pm:  Defending state champion Belleview Christian has qualified for regionals thanks to a 36-25 win over Flatirons Academy tonight.  The Bruins will play for the district title on Saturday against either Denver Jewish Day or Denver Waldorf.  Only the top two clubs advance to next week.
  • 7:28pm:  In a battle of Demons, Durango scores a 59-59 win over Glenwood Springs.  The matchup took place in the 4A first round and was played a day later than expected due to winter weather.
  • 7:27pm:  With St Mary’s beating La Junta 75-54 tonight, the 3A Tri Peaks district semifinals are set.  The top rated Pirates meet Manitou Springs at 5:30pm on Friday and then Salida and Banning Lewis collide at 8:30pm.  Both semifinals are at Florence HS and winners advance to the state tournament.
  • 7:16pm:  Rye advances to the 2A District 6 championship game by edging Holly 50-47.  The Thunderbolts also move into the 32-team regional tournament bracket as they’ve clinched a top three finish at districts with tonight’s win.
  • 6:59pm:  Eagle Ridge Academy gets a nice 61-47 win over DSST-Green Valley and will play for the Colorado/Confluence district championship game.  The Warriors also earn a berth in regionals next week.
  • 6:53pm:  Simla waited two days to play their 1A District 7 quarterfinal with Kiowa and didn’t miss a beat in scoring a 55-11 win.  The Cubs will now play two more games over the next two days; first up is a semifinal date with Pikes Peak Christian tomorrow and then either the district finals or third place game on Saturday.  A win in either gets them to the regional tournament.
  • 6:47pm:  Briggsdale barely survived a regular season game against Prairie and the two North Central rivals matched up in another good one in the 1A District 4 semifinals.  The Falcons held on for a 52-49 win to reach the tournament finals and the regional tournament next week.  They will face either Haxtun or Merino for the district championship on Saturday.
  • 6:45pm:  Denver Christian was not pushed as they moved past Byers 58-35 in a District 4 semifinal.  The Thunder move into the district finals against the winner of Limon-Lotus School and also advance to the 2A regional tournament next week.
  • 6:17pm:  Centauri is the 3A state tournament field after beating Bayfield 59-41.  The Falcons are also in the Intermountain league district championship and will face either Alamosa or Pagosa Springs.  Those two clubs were also scheduled to play today but the game has been pushed back to Friday.  Tournament finals are on Saturday at Pagosa Springs high school.
  • 6:16pm:  In a game delayed twice by weather, Ignacio wins their 2A District 3 quarterfinal over Ridgway 54-29.  The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday.  Next up for the Bobcats is a semifinal with Olathe on Friday.  The Pirates are seeded 6th in the bracket but are coming off a nice upset of 3rd seeded Cedaredge two days ago.
  • 6:02pm:  Lutheran gets a solid 52-45 win over Faith Christian in a closely battled 3A Metro semifinal.  The Lions are the defending state champions and will make a return to the 3A state tournament with today’s win.  They also advance to the district finals on Saturday where they will meet either Colorado Academy or Manual.  That game is later tonight.
  • 6:01pm:  DeBeque moves into the 1A District 1 quarterfinals with a 51-46 win over North Park today.  The Dragons next meet top seeded Caprock Academy on Friday and that winner will advance to the district finals and regional tournament.
  • 5:45pm:  Maybe a bit tougher than expected for Sanford but the top seeded Indians become the first 2A team to officially reach the regional tournament.  The Indians advanced by beating Del Norte 46-37 and they will face either Crested Butte or Lake County in Saturday’s championship game.
  • 5:40pm:  Granada cruises by Cheyenne Wells 56-34 to earn a berth in the 1A District 2 championship game on Saturday.  The win also moves the Bobcats into the Southeast regional next week where they will be the top seed in the bracket regardless if they finish first or second in districts.  Cheyenne Wells remains alive and will battle for the final regional spot from the district on Saturday.
  • 5:09pm:  Springfield gets a last second hoop to beat Primero 35-33 in the 1A District 3 semifinals.  That win pushes the Longhorns into the tournament finals against the winner between Kim/Branson and La Veta later today.
