Some news and notes from volleyball across the state on Thursday.  We track important results and break down how they impact league races and the playoff picture.  Updates will be posted throughout the night.

 

 

CLASS 1A

  • Dove Creek continues a perfect run through the San Juan league as they swept Ridgway 3-0.  The win keeps the Bulldogs unbeaten against conference teams and alone in first.  They lead 2A Dolores and Ignacio by one gamea
  • Simla picks up a nice RPI boost by downing McClave in three.  The Cubs opened the night 21st in the standings with McClave 12th.  League champions make the regional tournament and the remaining spots are filled by RPI.  24 teams qualify
  • Kim/Branson has a nice bounce-back match from the loss to Springfield as they edged Cotopaxi in four sets.  The Bearcats were 29th in RPI to begin the night and need to climb up that ladder to be playoff eligible
  • Springfield sits alone in second in the Ark Valley after beating South Baca 3-0.  They are one game back of Wiley in the standings and face them a second time later this month.
  • Cheraw suffered just their second loss of the season (14-2) as they dropped a tough five set match with 3A La Junta.  The Wolverines led 2-1 before the Tigers rallied to win the final two sets.

CLASS 2A

  • Fowler remains perfect in conference play and alone atop the Santa Fe conference after beating John Mall 3-0
  • Soroco’s sweep of North Park (3-0) keeps the Rams tied with West Grand in second place inside the Western Slope.  Both teams have one loss and trail Meeker by one game.
  • Ignacio and Dolores both picked up league sweeps to remain tied for second place behind 1A Dove Creek in the San Juan.  The Bobcats beat Mancos and the Bears toppled Norwood.
  • Denver Christian takes a three-set win over Highland to remain unbeaten and alone in first inside the Mile High.  The Huskies are now two games off the pace with a second league loss.

CLASS 3A

  • DSST-Montview keeps sole possession of first place in the Frontier with their 3-0 sweep of Pinnacle.  They lead Lake County and Academy by one game in the league standings
  • Resurrection Christian keeps sole possession of the Patriot lead with a 3-1 win over Valley.  They also have a two game advantage on all others as Liberty Common lost to Eaton (3-0) and University fell to Sterling (3-2).  The Eagles and Bulldogs were one game off the pace but now fall into a big mess of two loss teams; joining Sterling, Eaton and Platte Valley.
  • Lutheran is still perfect in the Metro thanks to their 3-0 win over Machebeuf.  The Lions opened the night sharing the conference lead with Faith Christian.  The Eagles were also winners on Thursday as they downed Kent Denver 3-0 and now sit 11-3 overall
  • Pagosa Springs snapped a long five match losing streak by downing Del Norte in three.
  • Vanguard’s sweep of Buena Vista (3-0) keeps the Coursers one back of Tri Peaks leaders Lamar and James Irwin.
  • Aspen stayed part of a three-way tie with Basalt and North Fork for second place in the Western Slope.  All three teams trail Delta (8-0) by one game in the loss column.

CLASS 4A

  • Classical Academy finishes off a tremendous week inside the Colorado Springs Metro.  They followed up a 3-2 win over Falcon on Tuesday by moving past Elizabeth in four.  The Falcons and Cardinals are likely the top challenges to TCA in their quest for a league championship.
  • Windsor used their 3-0 sweep of Longmont to remain one game back of Erie in the NCAA.  The Wizards meet Erie again on October 19th.  Erie stayed alone in first by downing Greeley Central in three.
  • Montrose picks up another SWL win as they moved past Grand Junction Central 3-0.  The Indians have one league loss to Fruita Monument and trail the Wildcats by one game.
  • Frederick stays alone in second inside the Longs Peak with a 3-0 sweep of Roosevelt.  The Warriors trail Niwot by one game and their lone league loss is against the Cougars.
  • Palmer Ridge matches the win by Rampart (5A) by taking out Pine Creek 3-1.  The Bears and Rampart remain tied for first in the Pikes Peak.  Neither has a league loss.

CLASS 5A

  • Fruita Monument wins a non-conference battle of league leaders in beating Delta 3-0.  The Wildcats are unbeaten in the Southwestern league and the Panthers the same in the 3A West Slope.
  • Rampart picks up another Pikes Peak league win in beating Doherty 3-0.  The victory keeps them unbeaten in the conference and tied with 4A defending state champion Palmer Ridge in first.
  • Grandview earns their second Centennial league win of the week.  Just two days after beating Eaglecrest and taking over second place, the Wolves stay alone in that spot with another sweep of Smoky Hill.
  • Broomfield collects a huge win inside the Front Range as they sweep Fossil Ridge 3-0.  Both teams were unbeaten in conference play so the highly ranked Eagles are now alone in first.
  • Chaparral wins again in the Continental; sweeping ThunderRidge 3-0.  The Wolverines are the lone unbeaten team in the league and keep their nice two-game cushion on the second place clubs.
  • Valor Christian downed Dakota Ridge 3-0 to stay unbeaten and tied with Ralston Valley atop the Jeffco
