It’s been another fun schedule of volleyball across the state and the regular season comes to a close a week from Saturday. A few league champions still need to be crowned but there are also two high quality tournaments on tap this weekend and next to help finalize post-season bracketing.

The first is in Sterling on Saturday where six ranked teams are in the field including four in Pool A. That group includes Sterling and Lamar from Class 3A, Wiggins from 2A and Fleming from 1A. Lamar is unbeaten on the season and sits second in RPI with Sterling 15th. The Savages are the Tri Peaks league champions while the Tigers will likely finish second in the Patriot.
Wiggins is ranked 6th in 2A RPI and is the returning state champion in that class. Fleming has played in 15 consecutive state tournaments and is coming off a runner-up finish a year go. They’re 3rd in RPI and shared the North Central crown with Briggsdale.
Pool B is also solid as it includes Alamosa and Frontier Academy from 3A, Denver Christian from 2A and Merino from 1A. Merino is the defending state champion in their class and enters the tournament 4th in RPI. Denver Christian landed the 2A crown two years ago and reached the Final Four last May. The Thunder lead the Mile High league and are 8th in RPI.
Alamosa has spent the season moving in and out of the top 10 of Class 3A. They’re 10th in RPI and a solid showing this weekend could allow them to host a regional tournament. Frontier Academy is well down the list in 3A RPI and won’t be a playoff team but they’ve played several highly ranked clubs while competing in the Patriot.
