Much as they have done all season, Valor Christian and Air Academy’s boys lacrosse teams proved something to the rest of the state Tuesday night.
The Eagles handed Class 5A top-ranked Regis Jesuit its first loss of the season, 14-8, on Tuesday night and may have staked its own claim for the top spot going the final week-and-a-half of the regular season with the victory. Valor Christian (11-2, 5-0 in League #3) can clinch the league title with victories over No. 10 Legend and No. 9 Mountain Vista to close out the regular season.
In 4A, Air Academy maintained its undefeated run with a 14-7 victory over No. 2 Lutheran. The Kadets (13-0, 4-0) can wrap up the Southern League crown with a victory over Cheyenne Mountain (9-4, 4-0) on Saturday. The Red-Tailed Hawks have won six in a row and handed Lutheran its first loss of the year April 17 behind three goals and an assist from Weber Rowell and 17 saves in goal from Walt Cameron.
Other leagues are set up to be decided in the coming week as well. In 5A League #2, seventh-ranked Fairview (8-1, 4-0) hosts No. 6 Erie on Wednesday and No. 5 Lakewood (10-1, 4-0) on April 28. In League #1, Northfield (7-5, 5-0) is at Boulder (7-5, 4-1) on Wednesday.
In the 4A Foothills League, Evergreen (7-3, 2-0) has three league games remaining. That includes Friday’s game against Golden (4-6, 1-0). Ninth-ranked Prairie View (9-2, 1-0 in Northern League) hosts Holy Family (9-2, 2-0) on Wednesday.
Here is a quick look at a game to watch in each classification headed into the season’s final 11 days:
Class 5A
Arapahoe at Cherry Creek, 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 28
The League #4 crown is up for grabs when these two rivals meet up in the final week of the regular season. No. 4 Arapahoe (10-1, 5-0) is unbeaten since a season-opening loss to Regis Jesuit. Senior Nicholas Parker leads the Warriors with 40 goals and is tied for the team-lead with 16 assists with junior Tyler Napolilli. … Defending state champion Cherry Creek (9-2, 4-0) hasn’t lost to an in-state opponent this season. The Bruins scored a combined 41 goals in two victories over the past week, and junior Wyatt Branish has 36 goals and 30 assists to his credit.
Class 4A
Aspen at Grand Junction, 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 23
It may be a non-league tilt, but that doesn’t mean this 4A showdown doesn’t have playoff implications. Aspen (9-1) is coming off an impressive 11-3 victory over No. 6 Telluride on Tuesday night. The Skiers have won five in a row since a loss to unbeaten Air Academy, and close the regular season with five games in 10 days. Sophomore Nate Moatz leads the team in scoring. … Grand Junction (11-1) moved up to the No. 3 spot in the rankings but has played only two games since April 7. Juniors Paxton Webber (41 goals, 35 assists) and Adyn Cassity (42 goals, 16 assists) are a potent 1-2 scoring punch.
