It was a very important past seven days on the volleyball courts as several teams moved closer to league championships.  We look back at the most important results in each classification and unlike football, we don’t limit the choices to just three per class.  Since there are many more games, we open the list to five or six teams across each division.

CLASS 1A

  • Kit Carson:  picked up a solid 2-1 win over Genoa Hugo on their way to the title at the Stratton tournament.  Both teams entered the match ranked in the top 10 and will meet again later in the season.
  • Springfield:  beat Kim/Branson last Tuesday to stay perfect in the Ark Valley.  That same night, the Longhorns gained sole possession of the league lead as Kim/Branson outlasted Walsh in five sets.
  • Merino:  the sweep of Yuma last Tuesday kept the Rams alone atop the Lower Platte standings with just three games left on the league schedule.  The win was also their 13th in a row since an opening loss to Briggsdale.
  • Dove Creek:  topped Telluride in four sets and now sit alone in second place behind 2A Dolores in the San Juan league chase.
  • Otis:  outlasted Haxtun in five sets last week to become the clear cut favorite for the District 5 championship.  The Bulldogs have also beaten Stratton/Liberty and Flagler/Hi Plains so they have wins over their top three district opponents.
  • Mile High Academy:  Beat Flatirons Academy to stay tied with Belleview Christian as league unbeatens in the 5280 conference.  Mile High Academy is also unbeaten overall at 11-0.

CLASS 2A

  • Fowler:  topped Rye last Thursday to remain tied with Swink (both 9-1) as leaders of the Santa Fe chase.
  • Rye:  despite the loss to Fowler, the Thunderbolts regrouped for a win over Rocky Ford that pushed them to sole possession of third place in the conference.
  • West Grand:  the win over Vail Mountain kept the Mustangs in second place in the Western Slope lead.  They still trail first place Meeker by one game but now have a two-game cushion on Paonia, Vail Christian and Soroco for the runner-up spot.
  • Highland:  the victory over Dawson changed the top four spots in the Mile High standings quite a bit.  The two teams are now tied for third place with identical marks of 7-1 but the Huskies have the inside track for the spot based on the head-to-head win.  Both teams are one game back of Denver Christian and Union Colony Prep.
  • Del Norte:  the Tigers scored an important win over Sargent inside the Southern Peaks.  The two teams opened the match tied with Sanford in a three-way battle for the league lead so the Tigers now share the top spot with the Indians.

CLASS 3A

  • Eaton:  the Reds scored a four-set win over University in a battle of two undefeated teams within the Patriot league.  With Platte Valley’s loss to Liberty Common, the Reds now share first place with Sterling as both teams are 6-0.
  • Englewood:  the Pirates now stand alone the 4A/3A Colorado 7 standings thanks to their win over Skyview last week.  They are now 8-0 and moved very close to the league title with the win.  It was also the first loss of the season overall for Skyview.
  • Lamar:  moved to 10-0 in the Tri Peaks with a three-set win over Buena Vista.  The win kept the Savages tied with Colorado Springs Christian in first place.
  • Colorado Springs Christian:  the Lions are now 9-0 in the Tri Peaks as they knocked off St Mary’s.  The Lions and Savages are also now two games up on all other conference opponents.
  • Alamosa:  it took five sets but the Moose battled past Pagosa Springs to remain perfect in the Intermountain league.  They also have a two game edge on both Bayfield and Centauri with just three league matches remaining.
  • Faith Christian:  the Eagles topped Prospect Ridge to keep pace with defending state champion Lutheran in the Metro.  Both teams are now 6-0 in league play with a combined record of 20-2.

CLASS 4A

  • Pueblo County:  won the first of two showdowns with Pueblo West in the South Central.  The win pushed the Hornets into sole possession of first place and the two will meet again later this month.
  • Lewis Palmer:  moved past Air Academy 3-1 last Tuesday to remain unbeaten in the Pikes Peak league chase.  It was their fourth consecutive win and they stretched it out to five straight by beating Vista Ridge three nights later.
  • Palmer Ridge:  kept pace with Lewis Palmer by beating Sand Creek in three sets for their fourth straight win.  The Bears also had a match with Cheyenne Mountain postponed due to weather.
  • Berthoud:  with a five-set win over Erie, the Spartans created havoc with the race for second in the Tri Valley.  The Tigers fell to 3-2 and now sit in a five way tie for second with all five squads trailing first place Windsor by two games.
  • Glenwood Springs:  stayed alone atop the Western Slope standings with a nice road win at Steamboat Springs on Saturday.  The Demons are now 8-0 in league action with a one game edge on Palisade.

  • Fort Collins: stayed within range of league leading Broomfield by downing Fairview last Monday.
