With about a month to go before the state tournaments in Colorado prep girls golf, this past week served as a reminder that the sport can offer some humbling experiences. While a few girls sprinkled in some head-turning scores, shooting in the high 70s seemed to be a pretty common winning effort this week.

A few highlights from border to border.

The 10-team Glenwood Springs RVR Championship typically brings out the best mountain teams annually, and this year was no different as Fruita Monument, Aspen, Steamboat Springs and Battle Mountain competed hard for top honors. Freshman Addison Larson shot 9-over-par 81 to pace the winning Wildcats, while Makena Thayer won another big event with her round of 76 for BMHS. Steamboat’s Kaitlyn Grommeck (81) and Aspen’s Lenna Pearson (83) also put together solid rounds.

Castle View and Legend competed well with Rock Canyon on Thursday at Saddle Rock, as all three teams were within 12 strokes of each other in a Continental League match. Legend’s Maddie Makino carded an even-par 72 to earn medalist honors, and nine players shot 79 or better.

Macie Doherty won the Yuma Invitational by 11 strokes Thursday, her 79 at Indian Hills good for yet another victory for the Sterling senior.

Brenna Higgins topped the Jeffco field at Lone Tree on Tuesday, her round of 72 pacing Valor Christian to the team victory.

Rye’s Gloriana Ruiz won the Pueblo City/County Championship tournament with her 82 at Elmwood. The Thunderbolts dominated the field by 43 strokes.

Timnath’s Cheyanne Schrick won two Longs Peak League tournaments this past week, including Monday’s event at the Olde Course in Loveland, where she shot 78.

Tess Morris, of Lutheran, played Kissing Camels with flair at Monday’s Coronado Cougar Classic, shooting 1-over 72 to win. Two sophomores (Manitou’s Addie Dorsey and Doherty’s Joylanae Barnhill) and a freshman (Air Academy’s Landry Frost) broke 80.

Katharina Cosby of Steamboat Springs won the Aspen tournament on Tuesday at Aspen Glen Club, nailing five birdies to aid in a 1-under round of 72. Grommeck (77), Thayer (78) and Pearson (78) were the others to break 80.

RainDance National hosted the Resurrection Christian 3rd Annual Girls Open on Tuesday, and Colorado Academy dominated a good field of teams thanks in part to another stellar round from Sophia Lee. She was five strokes better than the rest of the competition with her 1-under 71 that included three birdies.
