Let the postseason commence!

The wrestling season enters its penultimate weekend with regional tournament action around the state. Four regional tournaments will take place in each classification, with the top four individuals from each weight class in those regionals qualifying for the state tournament. That event runs Feb. 13-15 at Ball Arena in Denver.

Here is a brief overview of each regional, with a weight class to watch from each region:

Boys

Class 5A

Pomona is a big favorite again in 2025, and the Panthers bring six wrestlers ranked No. 1 in the most recent OnTheMat Rankings into the Region 1 tournament at Fruita Monument. Besides top-ranked Pomona, No. 4 Chatfield and sixth-ranked Fruita Monument are in the tournament. A bracket to watch is at 165 pounds, where Pomona’s Kalob Ybarra and Fruita Monument’s Will Stewart are the top two ranked individuals.

Region 4 at Denver North also features a trio of top-10 teams in Pine Creek, Brighton and Poudre. Pine Creek’s Griffin Rial is ranked No. 2 at 132, with Chaparral’s Declan Strait at the No. 3 spot.

No. 2 Ponderosa is hosting Region 2, with a field that also includes No. 7 Cherokee Trail. At 190 pounds, De’Alcapon Veazy is one of three Ponderosa wrestlers ranked first, with Cherokee Trail’s Mateo Garraffa third.

The Region 3 tournament at Broomfield includes No. 3 Grandview and No. 9 Erie. The Wolves have three individuals ranked first. Two of the top four wrestlers at 150 are Grandview’s Jonathan Montes Gonzalez and Erie’s Hunter Waneka.

Class 4A

It doesn’t get much better than having the classification’s top two teams in the same regional. Top-ranked Pueblo East and No. 2 Roosevelt battle in Region 1 at Coronado in Colorado Springs – in all, five top-ranked individuals in 4A are slated to compete. At 138 and 157 pounds, three of the top four ranked wrestlers are in the field. East’s Niko Fernandez (No. 1 at 138) joins Roosevelt’s Malakii Martin (third) and Eagle Valley’s Cole Good. At 120, Mountain View’s Isaiah Harrison is ranked first and East’s Julian Espinoza is ranked third.

Region 2 is also loaded, with No. 4 Sand Creek, host and No. 5 Mead and No. 8 Falcon all in contention. One class boasts the top two wrestlers: The 150 class has Bear Creek’s David Estrada and Greeley Central’s Noah Garcia-Salazar.

Region 4 in Windsor brings in third-ranked Windsor, No. 9 Severance and 10th-ranked Palisade. Severance’s Drake VomBaur is ranked first at 113, with Thornton’s Dominic Pacheco third.

Canon City and Thompson Valley are the only ranked teams in Region 3 at Canon City. Canon City’s Jack Doughty (190 pounds) is the only top-ranked wrestler in the region, making for some competitive brackets.

Class 3A

Pueblo Centennial High School hosts Region 4 and will see its fair share of big matches. No. 2 Alamosa, No. 5 Eaton and No. 7 Resurrection Christian lead the way, with each squad showcasing two top-ranked wrestlers. La Junta and Centennial also have No. 1 wrestlers in the regional. Keep an eye on the 113-pound bracket, where Eaton’s Blake Hawkins is ranked first and Alamosa’s Anthony Meder is ranked second.

Region 2 has four teams ranked in the top 10, led by No. 3 Brush and No. 4 Valley. Both eighth-ranked Fort Lupton and No. 10 Fort Morgan are also in the field at Valley High School. The Beetdiggers have two individuals ranked first in their weight class, including Nick Dardanes at 138 pounds. Also at 138 is Fort Lupton’s Josiah Gonzales, ranked third.

Defending state champion Mullen is in Region 1 at Alameda High in Lakewood. The Mustangs are deep, with teams like Jefferson and Holy Family hoping to push Mullen. At 285 pounds, Mullen’s Champion Dyess is ranked second, with Conifer’s Ben Metzger fourth.

Finally, Region 3 at Grand Valley in Parachute is loaded with teams from the Western half of the state, including No. 6 Centauri and No. 9 Gunnison. At 120 pounds, Centauri’s Caden Casias is ranked second and Delta’s Dawson Drozdik is fourth.

Class 2A

Cedaredge takes center stage in Region 2 at Ignacio High School. The top-ranked Bruins have No. 8 Monte Vista and defending state champion Meeker in the regional tournament. Cedaredge enters with four wrestlers ranked in the top two in their respective weight classes. At 165 pounds, three of the state’s top four ranked wrestlers reside in Monte Vista’s Jacob Pacheco, Ignacio’s Lincoln DeKay and Mancos’ Brandon Vannest.

Three top-10 teams are also in Region 1 at Akron, with No. 2 Wray, No. 7 Sedgwick County/Fleming, and No. 9 Wiggins. A weight class to watch is at 215, where No. 1 Tavery Chappell of Wray, No. 2 Anthony Estrada of Burlington and No. 3 Michael Pacheco of Wiggins all reside.

In Region 3, No. 3 North Fork and No. 4 Rocky Ford lead the field at Otero JC in La Junta. At 113 pounds, the top three ranked wrestlers sit in Rocky Ford’s Anthony Franco, Dolores Huerta’s AJ Jaramillo, and Crowley County’s Derrick Buford.

Fifth-ranked Highland and No. 6 Center are in Region 4 at Walsenburg. The 150-pound bracket has No. 1 Aaron Valdez of Center and No. 3 Giovanni Aldretti of Walsenburg.

Girls

Class 5A

Pomona brings a pair of InsideCO Wrestling top-ranked individuals into Region 4 at Fountain-Fort Carson, where the No. 2 Panthers are joined by fifth-ranked Widefield and No. 10 Vista Ridge. Justice Gutierrez (103) and Timberly Martinez (140) have been strong all season for Pomona. Gutierrez will have No. 2 Lilly Lundy of Lewis-Palmer in her region. At 190, Pine Creek’s Melanie Marin Lopez and Broomfield’s Shayla Martinez are also 1-2.

Region 2 also has three top-10 programs in fourth-ranked Loveland, No. 6 Brighton and No. 7 Eaglecrest. Those teams are also at Trojan Arena. Brighton’s Matilda Hruby has been dominant at 155 pounds, and she’ll have No. 3 Daisy Padilla of Arapahoe also in Region 2.

Region 1 at Coronado has top-ranked Central of Grand Junction and No. 9 Thornton. Prairie View’s Jaydin Cuevas and Littleton’s Kooper Griggs are ranked in the top two at 115.

Region 3 will see third-ranked Chatfield and No. 8 Douglas County go to Poudre High School. Watch out at 105 pounds as Doherty’s Katey Valdez and Chatfield’s Lola Gonzales are ranked first and second.

Class 4A

Just like with the 4A boys, the top two teams in 4A girls find themselves in the same region., with Pueblo Central and Lamar in Region 1 in La Junta. Central has two individuals ranked first and another second, and Lamar has one top-ranked wrestler in Ella Splitter (130).

Four top-10 teams are in Region 4 at Yuma: third-ranked Sedgwick County/Fleming, No. 5 Yuma, No. 8 Severance and No. 9 Skyview. At 125 pounds, No. 1 Lillana Limon of Sierra and No. 2 Lexis Amendt of SC/Fleming are together, as are Yuma’s Gese Sanchez and Wiggins’ Mackenzie Steinbar.

Region 3 has a trio of top-10 teams, with No. 4 Strasburg, host and No. 6 Canon City and No. 10 Alamosa combining for six of the classification’s top-ranked wrestlers. At 105 pounds, Canon City’s Piper Montoya and Bennett’s Emma Faczek are ranked first and second, as are Canon City’s Kate Doughty and Brush’s Olivia Herrera at 135.

Region 2 at Gunnison hosts a number of Western Slope squads in addition to Conifer and Mullen. Moffat County is the only team ranked in the top 10 – North Fork’s Velma Bailey (110) and Mullen’s Jzunie Jones (170) are the two No. 1 wrestlers in the tournament.
