Much like college sports has the Capital One Cup or the PGA Tour has the Race to the FedEx Cup, high school sports has its own year-long award. And after the fall season, Cherry Creek as massed a lead in the MaxPreps Cup standings.

At the conclusion of the fall season, the Bruins totaled 1,337 points, more than 200 points ahead of Lone Peak (Utah) who sits in second.

According to the MaxPreps writeup, the standings are based on schools’ MaxPreps Cup formula number, state championships won during the 2024 fall sports season, runner-up finishes and any placement in national rankings.

Cherry Creek won five state championships in the fall, capped by a 13-10 win over Legend in the Class 5A football state championship game at CSU’s Canvas Stadium.

The Bruins also won state championships in boys golf, boys tennis, field hockey and boys soccer.

The boys golf championship ended a long drought as the Bruins claimed the crown despite not having an individual player finish in the top 10. Henry Starr was the top Bruin in the field, shooting 1-under for the tournament to finish 12th. Wyatt Isgrig finished 15th and Dalton Schwartz finished 22nd to give Creek the crown. Cherry Creek won eight golf championships from 1957-81. The 2024 title was their first since 1981.

The boys tennis title was the fifth straight for the Bruins. They have a state-most 47 championships in the sport, 28 more than second-place Cheyenne Mountain.

The 1-0 win over Regis Jesuit in the field hockey championship ended a 17-year championship drought in the sport. The Bruins had advanced to the 2023 title game, but fell to Colorado Academy by a goal. Neilly Watts scored the championship-winning goal for Creek.

The boys soccer crown was maybe the most exciting win of the fall for the Bruins. A 1-1 tie sent the title game between Creek and Broomfield to extra time and it was Reed Wearner finding his brother Cole to get the game winner. It was a golden goal in so many ways and a Wearner Brothers production at its finest.

At halftime at Canvas Stadium, it was Legend holding on to a 10-0. To make matters worse, Jayden Fox suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter, putting Creek’s best offensive weapon on the shelf. But Dave Logan knows that a team doesn’t have to be perfect in a state title game, they just have to be good enough. The Bruins were that in the final two quarters to regain their place atop Colorado high school football with a 13-10 win over the Titans.
