Over the past few years, Colorado Preps has provided a weekly release of what we call the consensus rankings. Our poll tabulates the top 10 from MaxPreps, Packard, CHSAA and RPI to develop an overall top 10. The information is important as a similar formula is used to determine the playoff teams in all seven classifications. It’s even more important this year as only eight teams will earn post-season bids in each division.
The first release of the consensus rankings comes with a few asterisks. The first is our poll is released much earlier than normal. We typically wait until week six or seven to start presenting these numbers but with only a six week regular season, the numbers are released much earlier in 2020.
The second point involves the lack of a true RPI. CHSAA released the first edition of those rankings on Thursday, but we’ve not included them in our rankings because teams are bundled too tightly together. For example, there are currently five teams tied for third in Class 3A so awarding points fairly in spots three through seven is not possible. Six teams are also tied for 8th in eight man so we cannot define a true top 10 in that class as well.
The third asterisk is a lack of rankings for eight and six man football. We have not included them this week because in addition to the lack of a true RPI, MaxPreps has not issued rankings on these two divisions. With only two of the four components available, a true consensus set of rankings is not possible.
In the consensus rankings below, teams are awarded 10 points for a first place vote, nine for second, eight for third and so on through the top 10 in each poll. Every team that received at least one top 10 vote is listed. Votes were also tabulated before games on Thursday.
