Just one week after being edged by Grandview, Pomona’s boys wrestling team climbed back to the top.

The Panthers, ranked first in Class 5A in the most recent On the Mat rankings, took home three individual first-place finishes and utilized its depth to claim the team championship at the prestigious Top of the Rockies tournament in Lafayette.

Pomona’s 216 points got the job done, with Grandview (202.5), Pueblo East (198) and Ponderosa (194) not far behind.

Pomona’s Lincoln Valdez (106), Derek Barrows (144) and Maddux Najera (215) each won their respective weight class, part of nine top-six placers overall. Grandview placed eight in the top five, with Leland Day (285) finishing first. Pueblo East sent five to the finals, with Niko Fernandez (138) winning his bracket.

Ponderosa had three champions in Jack Simpson (126), Jaylen Burge (132) and De’Alcapon Veazy (190).

Other top finishers included top-ranked Drake VomBaur of Severance at 113, Isaiah Harrison of Mountain View (120), Billy Greenwood of Poudre (157) and Isaak Chavez of Mullen (165). Pueblo Central’s Genaro Pino, ranked second at 175 in 4A, held off 5A’s No. 1 Charlie Herting of Grandview via a 4-1 decision.

With regionals just a little more than two weeks away, here is a quick look back at the past week:

Boys

Northglenn Norse Invitational

Windsor held off Fruita Monument to finish atop the team standings in Northglenn with 240 points.

The Wildcats took second at 229.5, followed by Pueblo Central (168.5), Broomfield (164.5) and Legend (163.5).

Windsor won a stretch of five consecutive finals behind Walker Percy (157), Robert Kendall (165), Santi Fernandez (175), Brayden Fernandez (190) and Evan Perez (215). Fruita Monument’s Gage Chelewski (138) and Benjamin Romero (150) took first, as did Broomfield’s Asher Diamond (126) and August Soto (132).

Mel Smith Invitational

Cedaredge brought the team championship in the Mel Smith Invitational in Florence back to the Western Slope, finishing with 187 points to Canon City’s 175.5.

For the Bruins, Ethan Hice (132) was the only individual to finish first. Brush had three finish atop the podium in Nick Dardanes (138), Austin Ley (165) and Ritchie Bruno (175). Resurrection Christian’s two top-ranked individuals in 3A took first in Isaiah Johnson (215) and Samuel Stockwell (285).

A few matches saw top-ranked individuals go head-to-head. At 113, 2A’s Derrek Buford of Crowley County took an 8-2 decision over 3A’s Blake Hawkins of Eaton. Valley’s top-ranked Nehemiah Whaley posted a 7-1 decision over Centauri’s Parker Buhr, currently ranked first at 165. Eaton’s Cal Sidwell, ranked first in 3A at 190, took a 15-1 major decision over 4A’s No. 1 Jack Doughty of Canon City.

Girls

Tiara Challenge

Grand Junction Central, ranked first in 5A, won the Tiara Challenge at Douglas County High School over the weekend.

The Warriors topped a field full of ranked opponents, finishing with 185.5 points to edge Brighton (175), Eaglecrest (170.5) and Pomona (155).

The Warriors placed eight and sent three into the championship finals to hold off Brighton, which was paced by Matila Hruby’s first-place finish at 155. Hruby, ranked first in 5A, pinned the No. 2 wrestler in Central’s Shylee Tuzon. Tuzon had edged past 4A’s No. 1 Madilyn Gitke of Strasburg in the semis in a 10-9 decision.

Pomona’s Justice Gutierrez (100), Alora Martinez (125) and Timberly Martinez (140) each took first.

In a battle between top-ranked wrestlers at 115 pounds, Prairie View’s Jaydin Cuevas pinned Alamosa’s Gizelle Miraz.

Loveland Invitational

Fourth-ranked Loveland captured its own tournament, outdistancing Mountain Vista, Wiggins and Poudre.

Five individuals took first in their respective brackets: A’miyah McGee (105), Saydee Lussenhop (115), Maddie Wicken (125), Gia Warner (155) and Annabelle Gerrard (170).

Mountain Vista’s Rosie Rael (110), Ella Curtis (130) and Quinn Hartlieb (140-145) were also first.
