Silver Creek made program history when it reached the Class 4A semifinals last year.
That was great and all.
But it actually might’ve only been the start to something better.
Though it’s just three games into the 2025 season, the Raptors are an easy team to overreact about after it beat 5A powerhouse Broomfield, 1-0, on Thursday.
Senior Ben Barnett, who played little as a junior, scored in the 24th minute, and goalie Brody Bayon made two saves in the teams’ third straight shutout of the season.
It was the first time Silver Creek beat Broomfield, the state’s all-time winningest program, in the MaxPreps era.
But what does it mean going forward?
Well, after bowing out to Mullen a game shy of the 4A finals last year, the Raptors could be an even tougher out in 2025. If they stay healthy, of course.
They return perhaps their best player in Kaden Riedel, who missed the last half of the 2024 campaign with an injury. And they’ve also gotten early production from standout Rien Pacaro, who already has five goals and an assist.
Next, Silver Creek is home against Windsor on Tuesday. Then it’ll have a week off before hosting 5A Fairview on Sept. 11.
Below are the other must-see games of the week.
Class 5A
Cherry Creek at Fairview, 7 p.m. Tuesday: The defending champ Bruins (2-0) opened up their title defense with 3-1 wins over Castle View and Legend.
On Thursday, senior Cooper Arledge recorded a hat trick against the Titans, giving him four goals this fall.
Fairview (1-0) opened the year with a 3-2 win at Valor Christian last week. The Knights were the No. 9 seed in last year’s 5A playoffs and now are looking for redemption following a rare, first-round exit.
Class 4A
Centaurus at Battle Mountain, 2 p.m. Saturday: The Warriors (2-0), ranked second in CHSAA’s preseason 4A poll, beat No. 3 Battle Mountain 2-0 a year ago. But Battle Mountain went on to reach the semifinals, while Centaurus fell a round earlier to Silver Creek.
This fall, Gabriel Gonzalez has goals in both of Centaurus’ opening two wins. The Huskies (1-1), meanwhile, bounced back from a 7-2 loss to 5A Northfield with a 7-0 win over Summit last week.
Class 3A
Colorado Academy at Mullen, 4 p.m. Wednesday: Colorado Academy (1-1) had its three-peat bid denied last year with an unexpected second-round exit.
This season, it has split its opening two games, beating Arrupe Jesuit, while falling to 5A Northfield, both in a 3-1 result.
Mullen, 4A’s 2024 runner-up, beat Kent Denver 2-1 on Friday to move to 2-0 on the year.
Class 2A
Salida at Crested Butte, 4 p.m. Monday: Salida (2-0), last year’s 2A runner-up, already has three players with three goals this season. Isaac Sarmiento leads the way with three and two assists.
Crested Butte (3-0) is led by Max Naughton, who leads the team with five goals and an assist this season. Last year, the Titans were denied their fifth 2A title since 2018 after eventual champ Forge Christian eliminated them in the semifinals.
