DENVER – For the first time since the dual tournament brackets have been used to crown a team champion, Kent Denver rules atop Class 4A.

The Sun Devils put together a solid day in the championship dual against two-time defending champion Cheyenne Mountain, winning No. 1 singles (Lila Moldenhauer, No. 1 doubles (Kendall Adams/Samantha Brenner), No. 2 doubles (Claire Bookmyer/Sofia Begal) and No. 3 doubles (Claire Bookmyer/Sofia Begal) to win the dual 4-3 and halt the Red-Tailed Hawks run of state titles at two in a row.

This is the first team championship for Kent Denver since 2005.

In the play to clinch dual, matches were tied 3-3 and the No. 1 doubles match went into a decisive third set. Adams and Brenner took a 3-0 lead in the set before the Cheyenne Mountain tandem of Jocelyn Kelly and Saffron Heroldt rallied to take a 4-3 lead. But Kent broke the Red-Tailed Hawks serve to tie it up and then took the next two games to win the match.

The Sun Devils also claimed individual girls tennis titles in No. 1 singles, No. 3 doubles and No. 4 doubles.
